Hi Devon f,birds of any species have an annual molt, which is the period when all birds get a brand new "suit".The molting period happens during the hottest period of the year,so the
birds do not suffer from cold. What an intelligent Creator !!!!!
In your case your cockatiel will loose all of it's feathers, which will be replaced with new ones, but if it wouldn't be for the feathers on the floor ,you wouldn't be able to see any difference on your bird.So do not panic, all will be fine.
You may help your friend to speed through the process,by offering baths with water at room temperature, any time before noon,so he has time to dry up,before retiring to sleep, with wet feathers. He will enjoy that very much.
Feed your friend, with the best seed blend you can find, and offer treats in the form of vegetables like raw broccoli,or a piece of carrot as these will help him get his beautiful face patches back, unless he is a white face, and he will stay white.
Enjoy his company and learn to care to his needs, remember that he is a living creature, and you have been assigned as the person in charge to take care of him and be his "buddy".
Wish you the best, and keep the faith The Canaryman

All birds molt this time of year. It is normal. They usually just pick at themselves a little more than normal. You should feed him a little more food daily and try getting a spray bottle of warm water and misting them down once or twice a week. They love it and it will encourage them to preen more often. As for their face and cheeks- I am not so sure these feathers will actually fall off like the rest, but they may turn more vibrant colors. With my keets- they are scratching each other's head with their beaks like they do their own bodies, so maybe they do molt these feathers, or they are just itchy haha. Keep an eye on them thought to make sure they dont start picking abnormally or too much.

All birds molt, as the previous poster says. Make sure you supplement their feedings when they do molt, as it takes a bit out of them health-wise. You can buy special seed fortified with vitamins and minerals.

Yes - all their feathers molt - just like your fingernails and hair keep growing and your skin heals when you cut yourself. If, however, you have another bird in the cage, the other bird may be OVER-preening the cockatiel - that is, grooming its face/cheek feathers quicker than the bird is regrowing them.

Yes, they do lose the tiny feathers when they molt, but they are so small, you most likely will not notice them on the floor of the cage, or in my case, on the floor, as my bird only sleeps in his cage. I find tiny tiny feathers, on my hardwood floor. When I rub his head, which he likes, I can feel the tiny pin feathers, which are new feathers coming in.

I have a cockatiel and I've never seen that on him, but it might be different for every bird, this would be a question to just call your vet quick and ask. No sense in messing around.
