If the bird is fully feathered, it is most likely a fledgling and has left the nest on it's own and it's parents are caring for it. You need to replace it where you found it..preferably in a scrub or tree so it is relatively safe from predators, and the parents should come back to feed it. If it is unfeathered...then look for a nest and if you can find it...replace it into the nest. Do not worry about your scent being on the chick..birds have a very poorly developed sense of smell and will NOT reject a baby that has been touched. If you cannot find a nest, get the bird to a local wildlife rehab for it's best chance of survival. Also, keep in mind, it is illegal for you to try and raise this bird on your own. Even giving the bird water can drown it if you are not experienced at feeding wild birds. If you need a rehab, look for one near you here:

When I worked at a vet's I used to feed the wild baby birds that were there Science Diet ID with a toothpick. Science Diet ID is a prescription canned dog food. It is a bland type of food, so I would look in a pet store for something like that. I know, I never thought of feeding dog food to a bird before I worked there, but it sort of makes sense. The food is the sort you could pick up with a toothpick, otherwise you can try using your fingers. Don't worry that little beak can't do much damage to your fingers. Good luck!

What you can do is get bread and mix it up with milk till the bread is very soggy and mix it up and the birds will eat it. I have done that in the past and it worked.

Grubs, insects, berries, bread, but it must all be mushed up for it to eat.
