They are about the same, and it all depends on who is training them and how much time they are willing to spend on it. Sometimes it also depends on the bird and I have seen smart ones and stupid ones in both species.

I have had them both, and both are smart birds. I miss my budgies. They don't live as long as cockatiels. The budgies are much more adgile, and can get places you would not imagine. But my cockatiel is nosey, and he gets places you wouldn't imagine either. He loves to see the birds on You Tube.

COCKATIELS! U can teach them more things! I taught mine how to talk, fly, do tricks, how to fly off the ground and onto my hand, i tuaght it how to walk on top of his cage hanging up-side down!

P.S. If u do get a cockatiel and u want to teach it stuff be patient! Oh yeah, cockatiels live for 30 YEARS! Mine have 29 to go!

cockatiels are smarter but budges are tougher they can beat the crap out of cockatiels (most of the time) but cockatiels can out smart budges in open spaces a cockatiel can actually trick a budge to crash!

I take care of both at the exotic bird shop where I work and I would have to say that Cockateils are smarter.
