Roosters crow to let all the females know that he's there and that he's ready to mate. It also allows him to communicate with other roosters in the area saying, "I'm a bad*ss dude, you don't want to mess with me or my girls."

A lot of people think that roosters only do this in the morning, but it just starts at the break of dawn and then he continues to crow throughout the day.
