ok, i've always wanted a dog, but lately it seems that i've been wanting one more and more! my parents both love dogs(they used to have TWO before my sister&i were born) but they won't let me have one now. my dad says that i'm not responsible enough, even though i try hard to prove to him that i am. he thinks i won't comb it, wash it, feed it, pick up its poo, or walk it!! i LOVE animals, and he just doesn't believe me. my mom doesn't like dogs as much, but she won't let me have one because she doesn't really want it running all over the house and getting into trouble while i'm at school. she's also afraid about training it. but we could get a pre-house broken dog, right? please help me find a way to convince them that i can handle a dog!

It's a pathetic little squeak that sound more like a mouse. Our older cat could "miaow" at 7 months. I don't think it's a problem but is it normal and at what age should a cat start to "miaow"?

I would appreciate any ideas on what to do with a horse that will walk right over you if you don't move..If you have the halter or bridle on him he can be controled even though sometimes it's hard. He's fine in every other way but if feed or something gets his attention he going where he wants to go, especially if he is loose. I've tried carrying a whip and smacking him when he gets close but if i don't move at the very last second he will walk right over me. thanks for any tried and true methods and ideas

I just brought home our new baby pug - Clementine (link to her picture and video below). We already have a pug, they are about the same age. However, our new baby, Clementine has a snorting problem. I know this is normal for pugs, but our pug we had before NEVER snorted, ever. The woman who runs the rescue we adopted from said it was normal, that she has been to the vet to check for nose and palate issues and that everything is fine.
She said Clementine's snorting had gotten a little worse in the fall and she thought it might be allergies. She suggested giving her baby benedryl three times a day.
I'm wary of doing this - I'm afraid it's going to make her all groggy, etc.
Does anyone have any experience with this? How did your dog do if you ever gave it benedryl? Do you have a pug that snorts ALL the time? Do you have any other suggestions?
It doesn't bother me that bad, but I'm worried it bothers her. She sounds like a little piggy!

I was given a Farrel cat to care for after being spayed and surgery on his broken jaw. How do I dare to tame this wild cat? He is fearful everytime I get near him. Should I just let him go after he is healed and has been in a new place for five weeks? Will he stay around or try to leave his new home?

His eye infection is due to me always wiping his eyes and irritating them. They seem to bother him and seem a little red.
They have more discharge than usual(with this breed you always get a little disvharge, but I've noticed it to be a little worse than normal)

My 2 year old male pointer NEUTERED was pining for his friend so we got a FEMALE puppy ridgeback who is now 11 weeks old.She is sometimes aggressive towards him, bites and claims authority She draws blood and he never puts her in her place. Is this usual for a female to dominate a male and should i stop her, is it a puppy thing that he will sort when she is bigger. He is very obedient and placid and she is bullying. They get on great the rest of the time and dont fight over toys, food or beds but she is dominating. Will she settle down or will they end up having to be seperated.I do not allow her to bully him or bite and she stops when i say no or clap, then she sits and gives paw.

I saw one dog trying to climb up onto the other dog's back, my dad said that the one in the back hurt it's paw and the one in the front is helping him home... I just think they are dancing. Why would my daddy lie to me?

I will be able to get a horse finally after wanting one for 25 years. What is the best breed to look into? I have experience riding and such, but not one on one care. Of course, I will make sure I take the appropriate classes, if any to ensure proper care. But in the interm, I'd appreciate if someone would have a suggestion. Thansk

I don't have the ability to get a dog right now, but hopefully in a few years (I love dogs). I was just wondering, a lot of the shelters around here are no-kill. And I know those are good. However, would it be better to adopt from a no-kill shelter (save 2 lives - the one you adopt plus making room for another) or from somewhere that will put them down sooner rather than later (like a dog warden or something, i'm really not sure about that) because then you're saving the dog from dying (whereas the shelter one won't be killed)? Just wondering what everyone's opinion on this is, because BOTH seem like good ideas, I just can't figure out which would be better. Also, if anyone knows a good place to look for dogs that are about to be put down, that would be great info to have as well. Thanks!

I was reading about nutritional yeast (Brewer's Yeast) since I use it alot to cook with, and I read that I could sprinkle it on my cats food. It says it can help their immune system and help prevent fleas. I am happy about that cause one of my cats is allergic to fleas and although is on advantage and has problem under control, is still scratching her face all the time, even til it bleeds. I want to try this before I spend a ton of money for her to see a dermatologist. I have this crazy idea that maybe if her immune system is stronger that maybe it could help her battle this allergy and if it will help repel fleas that really excites me. Has anyone else given their pet nutritional yeast with good results? Does it seem safe?

I have a 1 yr old cat who weighs approx 10 lbs. he is declawed and fixed. I recently got a 6 wk old kitten. She was a stray and I have taken her in, to the dismay of my older cat. He didn't like her at first, now he wants to play with her, but he gets really rough. How can I get him not to be so aggresive with her without scolding him.

I came home from work yesterday and found my 1 year old kitty dead under an end table. I left for work at about 8am, and came home at 1:30 and she was already stiff...as if she had been dead for a couple of hours at least. Nothing seemed to be out of place. She was laying on her side, with all four legs out, her tail out, and there was a little blood that had come out of her mouth. I had her spayed when she was about 5 months old, and she had a reaction to the Anesthetics. It took her a couple of months to stop being shaky and to stop bobbling her head. It then took a couple more months for her to start jumping. Could that have caused issues with her brain and heart and could she have died from a stroke or heart attack? I have two other cats at home and they were ok when I got there. What do you guys think could have happened?

Reading through answers, I've found the recurrent message: "If you can't afford to take your pet to the vet, you shouldn't have one." Every time I read it, I'm troubled.

Obviously in an ideal world every person, not to mention every animal, would have access to health care. But in the meantime, we compromise.

Is it fair to criticize low-income people for having pets (leaving the question of children aside)? Obviously there are practical limits; if you can't afford to feed an animal, obviously you won't be able to keep it. But if you can provide a loving home, and can afford basics like food and water (and perhaps one-off fixed costs like neutering), isn't that a reasonable compromise? Isn't that better for an animal than life (or death) in a shelter, or as a stray?

I assume that most people on this forum are reasonably affluent. But I believe that sometimes people who can't afford professional help come here for amateur advice, and should be given that advice, not a reproach.

Is there any hope in keeping two female bettas alone in a tank together? I had a trio of female bettas that got along great, then one recently passed and all hell has broken loose. One will just not leave the other one alone. The bullied one took to hiding in a cave all the time, until the dominant one discovered that’s her hiding place and now the dominant one is constantly checking the cave (this dominant one seems smart and persistent). So the bullied one has started wedging herself in a group of leaves that rest close to the surface of the water to hide. Sometimes she gets on a leaf that is too high and a bit of her top side is actually out of the water, which seems dangerous to her health to me. I am thinking it would be best to buy a 2nd tank to separate them, but I would be open to buying a larger tank to keep them together if more space would help them get along (they are in a 5-gallon tank now).
