I don't have the ability to get a dog right now, but hopefully in a few years (I love dogs). I was just wondering, a lot of the shelters around here are no-kill. And I know those are good. However, would it be better to adopt from a no-kill shelter (save 2 lives - the one you adopt plus making room for another) or from somewhere that will put them down sooner rather than later (like a dog warden or something, i'm really not sure about that) because then you're saving the dog from dying (whereas the shelter one won't be killed)? Just wondering what everyone's opinion on this is, because BOTH seem like good ideas, I just can't figure out which would be better. Also, if anyone knows a good place to look for dogs that are about to be put down, that would be great info to have as well. Thanks!

Also, would it be good to get a puppy from a backyard breeder? I mean, as far as health complications and all that go, I KNOW it wouldn't,but you could get that in a shelter dog as well. My point is just that a lot of THOSE dogs will end up in shelters as well, or being left on the side of a highway, or out in the middle of nowhere, because the person doesn't have the time to bother with the pups or whatever the case may be. I understand it would be "supporting" them in a way, but really, if they've already done it, you're not going to stop them by not getting one of their puppies, you know what I mean?
(All this only after giving the so-called "breeder" a good swift kick in the *** for doing it lol)

I agree with most everyone here. Go to both shelters and find a dog that suits your lifestyle and is a good companion for you. Whether you get your new pet from either place you are doing a good service to the animal.

All of our dogs have come from the Humane Society...the best family members we've ever had!

Well, I used to work at the Humane Society, It's always best to adopt a pet from the any shelter. It's always good to save a pet. Almost every shelter are not 100% no-kill shelter. Always know thier history on every dogs, Some has been thru pretty much abuse, some aren't pretty friendly or scare. You can change that. If you want to start from a puppy, That would be great as well.

Keep an open mind here. Search the kill shelters first for a dog that is right for you, but sometimes you will have to go elsewhere for that perfect match. So if nothing works out in the kill shelters, don't feel bad about looking in the no kill rescues. Remember, any dog you rescue benefits, regardless of where they come from and it's more important that you find the dog that is the right fit for you first. If you get that at a kill shelter, great, but don't rule out looking into no kill rescues if you must to find what works for you.

Adopting a dog is adopting a dog. The key is that you are providing an unloved dog with lots of love from you, so adopt anywhere that have a certain type of dog that you like. Any dog that is at a shelter needs love, so hurry and give a dog your love.

Adopting any dog from a shelter is a plus!!! The dog you choose should be one you connect with, wherever it may be.

A really sad website is dogsindanger.com. Participating shelters put their animals on and how many days they have until they are killed if no one adopts them.

I got my lab from spca, (no kill) and my mastiff from the pound (kill shelter). I love them both and am so lucky to have found them!!!
