could have some sort of blockage or growth in the respiratory tract, or if it's just happening today, maybe some mucous (SNOT!) obstructing his breathing.

take him to a vet if you are concerned.... take care.

Like humans cats can develop lung problems as they age. Capillaries, air passages, begin to constrict. The diaphragm has to work harder to make up for this hence the louder purring.

It is also possible that like humans cats can develop allergies later in life. I'm sure you know what asthma is.

If he were my kitty I'd make an appointment to see my vet. These things can usually be taken care of no problem.

Like people, cats get more phlemmy as they age. Have you noticed him starting to snore, too? I bet he is! :-)

My cat is much younger and whistles when she breathes. It's common for her, and she isn't sick. However, if your cat has cold symptoms with it, it may be something to worry about.
