I just brought home our new baby pug - Clementine (link to her picture and video below). We already have a pug, they are about the same age. However, our new baby, Clementine has a snorting problem. I know this is normal for pugs, but our pug we had before NEVER snorted, ever. The woman who runs the rescue we adopted from said it was normal, that she has been to the vet to check for nose and palate issues and that everything is fine.
She said Clementine's snorting had gotten a little worse in the fall and she thought it might be allergies. She suggested giving her baby benedryl three times a day.
I'm wary of doing this - I'm afraid it's going to make her all groggy, etc.
Does anyone have any experience with this? How did your dog do if you ever gave it benedryl? Do you have a pug that snorts ALL the time? Do you have any other suggestions?
It doesn't bother me that bad, but I'm worried it bothers her. She sounds like a little piggy!

She is the black one, she is sitting on top of our first pug - Winston.

ALSO:
Here is a little video of her snorting, in case you need to hear it to understand:

I did not get this dog from a breeder. The woman who gave me the advice is a woman who runs a Pug Rescue Group in South Carolina. She would in no way consider herself a breeder or a vet. However, the ben 3x a day was vet recommended by her vet. I also think that is an insane amount of meds - but I needed some confirmation on that.
The vet has checked her - she does not have an elongated or soft palate. That's why I'm concerned that it might be allergies that could be bothering her.

The link to the video didn't work for me, so I'm not sure how it sounds, BUT...

I did have a pug growing up that snorted all the time. It could keep you awake at night. Nothing was wrong with her though. She just snorted. She breathed loudly. She snored.

So, your dog *could* have allergy issues. You can pursue that with your vet if you think that is the problem. But I just want you to know that it definitely is common for pugs to snort.

EDIT: Saw the video: Too cute and funny! Anyway, I could be wrong, but it sounds pretty normal! Our pug was like that.

Go to a vet that knows about the little pushed in faces of pugs. My sister had to have some sort of operation for her pug because he was snorting a lot. She had to go to a specialist.

I have a pug and he doesn't snort at all, maybe a little snoring every now and them.

I couldn't see your picture or the video.

Edit: Just watched the video. How cute they both are. Clementine's constant snorting doesn't sound normal to me. I think she is having issues. A second opinion from a knowledgeable vet would be in order. Good luck!

Thank you for adopting the dog from a rescue. I'd much rather see that than her be from a breeder. I wouldn't worry to much about the snorting. Unless she is lethargic, doesn't eat or drink, or has any other noticible health issues. Some push faced dogs like pugs, bull dogs, boxers, etc. have snorting problems. It's normal. Just look out for anything out of the ordinary like I've listed above. And yes, I have given my dog benedryl, because she has an allergies to something, we aren't sure of what though. We don't give her three doses a day though. Usually one is enough. It does make her drowsy for an hour or so. But then she is up and fine. Not to mention, my dog is significantly larger than your dog. She's a pit bull (possible presa canario mix) so she's large, almost 60 pounds already. So, I'd check with a vet before you start a medcine regiment, they may be able to give you something else if needed. But I wouldn't worry TO much about it.

You are right about it being a pug thing but this also happens to an smashed in face dog. Some of them snort more than others. Just like any predisposition it varies between dogs.

If it is an allergy the benedryl will help but it could just be that specific dog with a stronger predisposition for it than the other dog.

.the snorting is very common in Pugs. If you are concerned that the dog is not breathing in adequate amount of air , i've been told of a procedure by a vet in Pensacola fla. that surg. opens these airways. I raise pugs and none of mine have needed it but their is a answer for the problem. hope I've helped you.

I would take Clementine to the vets for a thorough checkup. It never hurts to get second opinions.

Also, I would be leery of giving any medication without the recommendation of a qualified vet. so discuss the benedryl thing while you're getting Clementine checked out.

I've been around Pugs before and I believe they are "known" for their snorting.
