I was reading about nutritional yeast (Brewer's Yeast) since I use it alot to cook with, and I read that I could sprinkle it on my cats food. It says it can help their immune system and help prevent fleas. I am happy about that cause one of my cats is allergic to fleas and although is on advantage and has problem under control, is still scratching her face all the time, even til it bleeds. I want to try this before I spend a ton of money for her to see a dermatologist. I have this crazy idea that maybe if her immune system is stronger that maybe it could help her battle this allergy and if it will help repel fleas that really excites me. Has anyone else given their pet nutritional yeast with good results? Does it seem safe?

Yes I've heard of that before, but I don't see why it would work, particularly for fleas.

Before you go off to see a dermatologist, there are a few mor things you need to do. Since your cat has a flea allergy, you need to be sure you're 100% flea free, and this won't happen with just Advantage. Advantage is good, but it only kills adult fleas, so it doesn't break the lifecycle. You MUST treat your house as well - and treat it with a proper spray from a vets, not a pet store. You may have to spray your house twice, 10 days apart, to get any newly hatched eggs

Treating the environment is very important, as this is where most of the fleas are living. I also suggest getting your cat some Program tablets from the vet, or the 6 monthly Program injection. This stuff sterilises fleas, so it breaks the lifecycle. By using the spot-on, and a house treatment, and Program you're attacking the problem from every possible angle and can be 100% flea free - which is the only way to treat flea allergies.

1) Most natural foods stores or vegan online retailers. 2) They do cost a lot per pound, but they're very light. A little goes a long way. 3) Yes, I use it in recipes, and I sprinkle it on top of pasta and tomato sauce. If you're pan-frying tofu, it's good to sprinkle nutritional yeast and flour into the pan to coat the slices. 4) It can't be used interchangeably with brewer's yeast. But the Red Star Vegetarian Support Formula is supposed to be high in B12. That's the disadvantage of buying bulk--it may not be Red Star.
