I need some advice. I recently took my dogs to Schutzhund training for the first time to see if it was something they would be interested in, and if it was something that I wanted to do. Of course, I have 2 male German Shepherds, and I am very interested in the sport, however, I was completely discussed at what I witnessed. I have studied dogs and dog behavior for the past 5 years, and I love my dogs. They do what I ask, and I rarely have any major issues. The people that were training their dogs, however, were literally beating their dogs. One guy got mad at his dog, took his hat off and just kept hitting the dog. On top of that, the dog had a device strapped to its body that if the dog did not keep his body close to his owner, he got shocked. The same guy was telling another owner that when hos dog was in the middle of the jump over the wall, he was to jerk the leash hard. Is this the actual way to train for Schutzhund?

I know good and well that 8weeks is better, 12 weeks best, but the people giving away pups are going to bring them to the shelter like, tommorrow. My sister has her heart set on one of these (free) jack russel/beagle mutts and I don't want to say "it'll be okay" and thn not know what to do, or say "no way" and not get her one.

So what should you do to socialize a 6week old pup away from mom and siblings? We have a seven month old papillon and four cats, would that be enough to let it happen naturally?

Just got the dog about a month ago and he is great with kids and has never acted aggresively even with my 4 and 5 year old boys. He attached himself immediately to my wife and follows her around. When we go to bed at night (I know the dog should have never been allowed to inhabit my bed, but he's so small I never notice him there) if my wife gets into bed first, the dog growls at me. If I say his name loud or advance to him, he cowers and jumps off and hides. It is possible he was treated harshly by his previous owner but I doubt he was abused. I've never laid a hand on the dog to scold him, haven't needed to. His reaction is more comical than frightening, he acts like he's annoyed when I come to bed with my wife but even with the growling, he is so afraid of me he shakes. Can anyone explain his behaviour? I can only assume he is annoyed that I am interfering with his being with my wife but don't pretend to understand dog logic.

We just moved into a rental house that had a bunch of dogs in it before, now my poor indoor cats are covered in fleas. The fleas also for some reason like to bite me. My feet are covered in flea bites and it sucks. I vaccum often, and have bathed the cats only one will wear a flea collar. I also use a natural flea powder on them it smels minty. And I am constantly putting DE (diatmacious earth) down on the carpet. Nothing works please help.

de-worm and de-flea her. I would like to do it asap, but is this ok?

I have got the spot on treatment for both, so would this affect her at all?

Also any advice about an un neutered tom cat that keeps hanging around in my garden waiting for her to come out, so he can have his wicked way with her? He has donr this for months, so will the fact that she has now been neutered, stop him from trying it on with her? If not, what else can i do??

I live in South Florida. It is a red bird, not a cardinal. It is about the size of a blue jay. It has 2 black stripes from the eyes onto its back. Can you please help me figure out this bird? Thanks.

I have a 3 year old gelding thats needs breaking. We don't know where to start!

The people that we got him from say he's broke, but thats something I would have to see to believe.

The other day my step mom just layed across his back for a few seconds and he broke out with bucks. He was like nope! Not gonna happen! He went crazy!

We don't know what to do. We've never broke a horse before, our trainer says she doesn't break the babies. We can't pay somebody to come out and work with him, we have other horses to take care of too. Selling looks like our only option so far and we would hate to have to give him up.

Please! Somebody help me.

Hi my neighbours cavalier (7mnths) maybe older, had a fall 1 week ago and has an occasional limp now and then, we did the leg stretches (which vets do to check joints) no reaction, he is eating fine and he runs around with no pain, he isn't lifting up his paw, nails are trimmed. Any ideas on what might be wrong?

Ok, so I have an 8 month old baby, then we have our furry-born kitties, 5 years, 2 years and 1 year. Lately when we pull our daughter's stroller out, the younger two climb in (one in seat, one in bin underneath), and meow until I push them around the house.
They are indoor only cats. I was wondering if anyone else had a pet stroller for their kitty? Was it a good purchase?Which one did you get?

My 14 y/o dog has a degenerative nerve problem that will lead to his hind section becoming parylized. His legs are getting worse litlle by little. He was also diagnosed with cancer. All this will lead to him being euthanized when the time seems right. I started thinking about how people can donate their bodies to science and am now wondering if animals can be donated to help vet/researchers better understand certain problems so that in the future dogs like mine might not have to suffer these problems. If my dog can help others in the future then I would like to whatever I can.

my music teacher told me that she potty trained her guinea pig. how does a person successfully do this? i am adopting a guinea pig from a friend who doesn't care for it, and he probably will have to relearn social skills first and get used to people. i am used to all types of rodents and animals but piggies are new to me. i have potty trained my dog, idk how different it is. any tips?

thanks in advance

Open question to anyone with the knowledge or expertise/ Do Parrots have fleas or mites? My mother was given a parrot on Mother's day. It's only 4 months old but have been with us for one month only. Recently, it scratches almost everyday. And how true it is that Parrots are prone to bacteria?

I have 3 male dogs. One is a 5 yr old mini dachshund who is kinda spoiled and very attached to me. The 2nd is a 10 month old mini dachshund who has quite the personality. The 3rd is a 4 month old rescued shar pei. In the last 2 weeks the 10 month old has started attacking the 5 yr old. They fought so bad last night that the 5 yr old was bleeding. He also blocks him from eating out of the food dish. The 5 yr old is fixed but has always been the leader of the pack. Is this something the 10 month old will grow out of?

I have a horrible ant problem.

I read a borax mixture can help, but I have two dogs.
One dog is particularly fond of 'snuffing' things.
That makes ant killers no good and salt sounds like a bad idea too.
Any ideas? I sure hate ants.
Ideas that are out:
Salt
Pesticides
an exterminator
Borax

What can I do? What can I use?

Do I treat her different while this is going on or keep at her normal routine?

2007-06-04 06:46:18 · 3 answers · asked by I dunno 2 in Other - Pets

First, how do you deal with this? I knew it was coming soon because the vet said his condition was going to get him soon (heart murmur and kidneys failing). I thought I was prepared. I put him in a box, had my morning cereal, and read the paper like any other day. I drove out to the country where my cat is buried and dug a hole. Everything was fine until I put him in the hole. I started sobbing like a child and can't seem to stop. We brought him home from the pound 13 years ago and he has been my buddy ever since. I work from home and he sat by my side all day every day. I just wonder how to proceed from here. I'm so sad.
Also, my sheepdog worshipped the ground he walked on. She seems confused and I don't know what to do. Any helpful tips would be appreciated.
