I have a horrible ant problem.

I read a borax mixture can help, but I have two dogs.
One dog is particularly fond of 'snuffing' things.
That makes ant killers no good and salt sounds like a bad idea too.
Any ideas? I sure hate ants.
Ideas that are out:
Salt
Pesticides
an exterminator
Borax

What can I do? What can I use?

A neighbor, brought me an abandon kitten only a day old, I took her in and started the life saving procedure. If you have the time, this is the best thing to do. Find a container or basket that is big enough to accompany a heating pad and kittens. On low, and lightly covered put the kittens on the heating pad. Cover them lightly and put in a small furry stuffed animal, just for their comfort. Go to a pet store, get a kitten bottle and kitten formula, follow directions and feed them according to can or at least every couple of hours. You'll know when their hungry and full. Just make sure their never cold or hungry and you will do just fine. GOOD LUCK!

The other answers are good. To keep ants out of the dogs food, buy some chalk, any chalk, doesn't have to be that pesticide kind. I buy a bucket at the 99cents store, Its the real big stuff, fat....make a big circle around there food dish and the ants will not cross a chalk line.

I had a massive, about 4 feet wide, ant colony that I chased all over the yard with chemicals. They didn't die, they relocated. I was looking to dump the ashes from my Weber grill on day and dumped it on the colony. Did not pay any attention but a week later, the ants were gone. They haven't come back yet, either.

are the ants inside or outside? if they are out then take 1/4 cup of liquid hand soap and 1 gallon of cool tap water and dump it on the anthill, repeat in 1 hour so the mixture will penetrate the whole anthill. if the ants are inside make sure you clean the surfaces of where you see them most daily. if there is food around then make sure all food is in sealed containers, ziploc bags, tupperware containers, plastic containers for cereal, sugar, coffee, etc. you could also make little sachets of bay leaves, cloves, mint leaves, cinnamon, or garlic and hang them where you see the ants. or feed then instant rice or grits, it will expand in their tummies and kill them.

Spray plain vinegar. Use ant gel from hardware store and put in crack that they are coming in. The gel is carried by ants back to the nest and all of them are killed. The vinegar wipes out their scent and also kills them.
