my music teacher told me that she potty trained her guinea pig. how does a person successfully do this? i am adopting a guinea pig from a friend who doesn't care for it, and he probably will have to relearn social skills first and get used to people. i am used to all types of rodents and animals but piggies are new to me. i have potty trained my dog, idk how different it is. any tips?

thanks in advance

omg, potty training a guinea pig doesn't teach it to go to the toilet, but back into it's cage to take a poty break verses making a giant mess on the floor

Hi cool that youre adopting piggies. There are two ways which are successful to train guinea pigs and rabbits how to use the potty. You either find the corner were they go to the bathroom (not every guinea pigs chose a corner) and put the litterbox there. If it doesnt work and they chose another corner, there is another way, this is how i taught my rabbit. You take a few feces and put them into the litterbox along with bedding visible for the guinea pig then they automatically go to the bathroom there.
I hope it works for you

I have guinea pigs and you can most certainly potty train them. Do not listen to these ppl that say you can't. How I do it....I have one of those small corner litter pans(used for ferrets and the like) and I notice where she likes to potty and place it there (in the cage). Then I remove all bedding and place it in the litter pan. I put no other bedding in the cage bc if I did, she would just use it. Within a week, she was pottying in the litter pan. Makes cleaning alot easier. She has accidents here and there in the cage but the majority of waste is in the litter pan.

Keep at it! It can be done!

It's terribly hard, and sometimes frustrating, so good luck. I hope that you have patience! Start off by holding her on your lap. Extend the time a little bit each week and give her a treat after you've finished. Place her back in the cage where she should be going to the bathroom. After you're sure she won't "go" on you, then start with floor time. Put down towels around the areas where she is probable to "go". This means corners, under objects, wherever she feels secure. Do the same as before, by extending the time and feeding her a treat and placing her back into the cage litter pan. I hope you're successful, it's quite a challenge : )

I've heard you can do it but I've found it to be impossible. Whatever you do, do not use cat litter. Bad, bad, bad for the pig's health! Guinea pigs smell only if you don't clean up after them! I scrub it down once a week but I change the dirty bedding (wet pine shavings is what smells so use carefresh) and pick up the droppings once or twice a day.

I've tried and tried to get mine to go in one certain spot but like any other rodent she just goes whenever she has to go no matter where she is. She even pees in her bedding and then she sits in it. She loves to pee in her hay then she eats it & her poop too. Guinea pigs are generally sweet loving animals but they are gross. Good luck!

I've never done it but I've done some research, see where he/she goes the most put the litter pan(made for small animals) in that corner and put her soild bedding in it that way when she goes she knows thats where she has to go, it doesnt always go as planned the first time so place her in if you have to in there and show her. Good luck :) and good for you for wanting to adopting a guinea pig.

I have raised several guinea pigs, I love them dearly. I have never heard of potty training a pig. I have heard of people putting small homemade diapers so they can run around on carpet.

You teach it to use a litter box much like a cat does.

Either that or find it a doll house with a bathroom. Just make sure you keep lot's of toliet paper on hand,. They hate it when they can't wipe.

You can't. they are like any other rodent. they go when and where they feel like it, thats why they are kept in cages with litter on the bottom. the cage also stinks especially in the summer. My husband and I had one last year and the smell
was terrible. even when we kept his play yard clean. we gave him to a day care center.
