Open question to anyone with the knowledge or expertise/ Do Parrots have fleas or mites? My mother was given a parrot on Mother's day. It's only 4 months old but have been with us for one month only. Recently, it scratches almost everyday. And how true it is that Parrots are prone to bacteria?

I have 5 Parrots and I have not ever experienced fleas or mites. However it is not impossible for them to get them. I dont see it as being a common issue if their environment is kept clean.
As far as bacteria goes, once again a clean environment will prevent this. Also it is very important to change their water frequently throughout the day, sometimes they will try to soak their food in the water or poop in the water and it should be changed immediately. It is very important to make sure the water and food dishes are clean. Poop in the cage can also cause bacteria, once it dries it powderizes and can cause bird illness. So basically keep a nice clean environment and you should be ok. Good luck

Yes, they can have mites or other parasites.

How often does your mother bathe it? It may be that the parrot's skin is dry. You can take the bird into the shower with you or spritz it with a water bottle.

You may also want to put a quick call into your vet -- if you didn't take the bird for a wellness check when you first got him/her, you should do so now to rule out any medical issues.

Parrots can carry mites, but it is also likely to be dry skin. Birds enjoy baths, and can have one everyday (as long as they are kept away from drafts. There are even perches you can attach to the wall in the shower. Try spraying him down with warm water to see if the itching improves. Otherwise, he may need to see a vet for mite medicine (or you can call for a recommendation).

They can get mites but frankly, it's not too common. Yes, they can get bacterial infections. You will need to find an avian vet- a veterinarian with specific training in caring for birds. Do not hesitate to take a bird to the vet when he or she acts sick because they hide diseases until they're quite severe and by the time you see a problem he may be very sick.

BATHING A PARROT
My bet is that your mom's little friend needs a bath. Their feathers need to be completely saturated with pure water often... I generally recommend spraying or bathing a parrot daily when the weather is warm and at least weekly in colder weather, with a heater and a warm place to dry off. Do not blow dry the feathers or use shampoo- just water and let them dry naturally.

Often parrots don't appreciate baths when they first get introduced to them. You can bathe a parrot in several different ways. You can take it in the shower with you and let the water fall on it while you hold it- if you are sure it won't bite. You can fill the sink with a little water (just enough to come halfway up his legs) and let him splash in it. You can provide him with a bathing bowl in his cage. You can spray the air above his cage with warm water from a spray bottle and let it fall on him. Some birds like to be sprayed directly, but usually you have to work up to that.

While he may not like it at first, continue to expose him to water a little at a time until he learns to bathe on his own. At first just a little mist of water followed by a special treat is enough but gradually work up to the point that he enjoys his daily bath.

Yes they can get both.
there is a Mite button that you get at the pet store that attaches to the inside of the cage. it has a deterrant that keeps fleas, mites etc. away from your bird.
