I just moved into a tiny apartment and my spoke alarm is right above my oven. Every time I turn the oven on it sets off the smoke alarm, even when it's only been on for a few minutes to preheat and doesn't have anything in it. It's driving me nuts, and I'm sure my neighbors aren't too please. Should I disconnect my smoke alarm? How? Is there another way?

Last night the lights went off completely for two hours, then they came back but only 'half'.
They are very dim. Plus my kettle will warm water but not boil it, and the plugin heater barely does anything to heat the room up. We have no light in the bathroom.
We are in Sydney where there have been massive outages - but I have never experience anything like this before...
What should I do?

I accidentally turned the microwave on without putting anything in it. After a few seconds, I heard a buzzing noise and saw that microwave had some orange light in it, kind of like sparks. And after opening it, I saw that towards it's right on top, there is some grey/smokey stain. Other than that, it was fine and it is working. I am just scared to heat any food in it. Is it safe to use? Is there any kind of lead or radio poisoning danger through the food heated in it? Is it any harm to pregnant woman or kids? Thanks so much in advance.

The house we recently moved into has a weird bathroom. the toilet never flushes, it only fills up with a bit of water and thats it, no flush. When the people who live downstairs flush their toilet, water comes up from ours and a gurgling noise is heard from the bathtub. Soon after, a sewage smell comes out of the bathtub drain. I'm gonna be stuck in that house for a while, so I wanna know if the cesspool is acting up or something.

My washer is in the back of the house, there are toilets in the middle and front part of the house. When the water is draining the wash, both toilet water will bubble then drain. Any idea what could be causing this. I had a plumber run a smake from the front toilet to the street about a month ago. Thanks

The stovetop works ok but only the broiler setting works in the oven. Therefore I am unable to bake things. We have told him this from the first day we moved in and always promises to have it fixed, but more than a year later he still has not gotten it fixed. Is he required by law to have a working oven?

I have just moved into a new flat and have white bathroom floor tiles. There are quite a lot of marks on them, which looks like either tile cement or sealant. The builders told me to use white spirit, but that does not work. Can anybody out there tell me what else to use.

the gurgling occurs about 3-5 seconds after I run the water. I can run the water as long as I want and it does not get backed up into the sink (so I don't think there is a blockage). what would the resolution be? should i call a plumber? would it be at a reasonable cost to fix this issue

We installed a new shower base and surround last June. Now there is a crack in the base about 2 inches from the drain. The crack is about 3 inches long, but there is no gap. I don't want to have to tear the whole thing out and replace it if it can be fixed.

I am reading up about fuse box safety because one fuse keeps blowing on my fuse box at home - basically I want to make sure it's not a fire risk. There is an odd smell at the fuse box when certain appliances have been used which is concerning me. Every website I go on advises to get an electrician if you smell "hot insulation"...but how am I supposed to know if it's insulation I can smell! I don't know what insulation smells like!

I have only been living in my house for less than a year, but I really want to make sure I get my security deposit back. This is my first time renting. I am moving out in two weeks and I've already scheduled someone to clean everything after I move out. My big concern is the walls. I think the house is a little bit old because when I tried to nail some pictures on the wall, it started to crumble and fall apart leaving me with 3 or 4 1/4"-1/2" holes in the wall! Is it better to try to fix it myself, hire someone or risk losing my deposit? I was planning on filling the holes with wall putty and painting over them, but I'm afraid I won't be able to match the paint.

We are soon moving into a home we bought and the neighbors said the house has been vacant for almost a year but the owner has been coming by to do work on it occasionally.

I don't know how often the owner was there or if they used the toilet, but the electricity and water are still turned on, so maybe he used the septic system a little while he was there.

Anyways assuming it hasn't been used in almost a year:

What do I need to do to start it?

What sort of problems should I look out for if it hasn't been used?

Are there any shut off valves or anything I should know about?

Anything I need to do if it starts to back up? The house is near a river.

I've never had a septic tank before and this will be our first home.

I've heard of using yeast to keep it working properly:

How much yeast do I use to start it?

And how much yeast and how often do I use to maintain it?

Thanks for any help you can give me!

I put my foot through my four year olds's pine table which he eats at and is very precious to us both. Had it a long time! It is a clean break, and yes, I know i should have used the ladder but there was someone else on that! I will learn from this one tho! Never stand on a kids table when you have a roller full of yellow gloss in your hand! Thank you...xxx
