I am reading up about fuse box safety because one fuse keeps blowing on my fuse box at home - basically I want to make sure it's not a fire risk. There is an odd smell at the fuse box when certain appliances have been used which is concerning me. Every website I go on advises to get an electrician if you smell "hot insulation"...but how am I supposed to know if it's insulation I can smell! I don't know what insulation smells like!

Fuses only blow when they over loaded try pluging the appliances on another out let... In any case call an electrician you may be better off getting breakers installed. Fuses havent been used for a long time Some power companys have grants to help you...

The coating on electrical wire can be either rubber based or plastic PVC, either once warmed will give off a very distinctive smell. The best thing to do is to get a piece of wire and warm it over your cooker .. The smell you will get is unmistakable and may make wheeze - cough and sting your eyes. !

Also if you keep blowing fuse, there is a definite overload situation and you should get a qualified electrician to check it for ya,,
