I need to have my AC replaced and I would like to buy the one that is the most energy efficient, but I hae no idea where or how to look. Any advice would be nice.

Look up the SEER rating. Higher the number, more effecient it is. But, be careful.... the highest rated ones, currently about 18 SEER cost about twice as much as the common ones that is 13SEER. You will almost never get your payback in terms of dollars spent.

Also, many ultra high-seer units use multiple compressors. If something is to fail, maintenance costs are higher.

The system that would be the most efficient would be one with the condenser exchanging heat with a closed loop ground cooling system. This might be cost prohibitive for you to install. Otherwise, look at the SEER ratings, and get the highest that will work with your evaporator, unless you plan to replace both. Most units now start around SEER13.

Green Dude--unless you have certifications in A/C installation. Use the phone and call professionals,--they will test the unit before you buy something ya don't need. Just by your question you have yet to call to see if it is broken. Look admit you don't have the foggiest idea of what you are doin. If ya did you would not ask this question. A/C is expensive if you can't pay the piper buy a fan.
