There should be a valve down in your utility room where you furnace and hot water tank tank are hooked into your gasline. It should be maked clearly or you should be able to see which one it is. By code there has to be a seperate shutoff.

The heat is from the pilot light. If you shut it off, you will need to relight it in the fall.

On the bottom of the fireplace, there should be an access panel. It may take some study to figure out how it is attached, but it should be rather easy to open up. Behind this panel you will find a flex line and a shutoff valve. Turn the valve perpendicular to the gas line, and the pilot will go out.

Close the control valve near by fireplace .Pilot will get off.
If again hot air came out cover top of the chimney hood by
wood or a plate , maybe there's downdraft from out side
because of air courtesy.
