the gurgling occurs about 3-5 seconds after I run the water. I can run the water as long as I want and it does not get backed up into the sink (so I don't think there is a blockage). what would the resolution be? should i call a plumber? would it be at a reasonable cost to fix this issue

The gurgling is caused by an improperly vented drain. It may not be the drain in the sink that is gurgling. Something in the house sewer system is venting through that drain.

I would say it is a vent (or lack of) problem. drainage systems need air to operate properly. This air is provided by the vent. The main vent line runs out the roof of the house and each fixture (sink, toilet etc) has a pipe going from the fixture drain to the vent. When a fixture is not getting enough air, it causes a vacuum which sucks air from elsewhere and causes gurgling.

on your sink top, next to your faucet, should be a vent for the drain (small cylindrical shaped chrome cap) pull the cap off and make sure that the vent is not clogged with anything. This is a very common thing especially if this is the only drain that is having problems... If the problem persists in more than one drain, it could be the vent pipe on the roof has become clogged or covered!

It sounds like trapped air. The water is going down and doesn't have enough room in the pipe to flow so you're getting that noise (Basic displacement of water versus air as the water travels). You'd probably have to put a S pipe in under the sink. or put a wider pipe in. If you already have one (s pipe) is the distance from the drain to the bend fairly far? More than a foot? If so you could do the work yourself but if you're not familiar with it/ don't have the tools you may need a plumber. I'm no professional but it's the kind of job I could handle. Umm... I hope...

Anti syphon trap is good idea, worth checking that the sink/bath pipe connection is larger than the sink pipe. sink will be 1 1/4" bath will be 1 1/2" but then should run through at 1 1/2".

that gurgling is just air going down the drain, you might want to check the j trap to make sure there is not something stuck in there very simple.

the gurgling is your trap pulling.
which means when you let water down the waste, it pulls the water out of the bottom of the trap. it cant be that bad as you would sometimes get smells coming out of the waste,
all you need to do, is replace it with an ani-siphon trap.
good luck!!

Sounds as though the sink drain was never vented properly and it is trying to suck air. If if drains like you say, forget .
