why do I get a strip of grass down the middle after I cut the lawn

try replacing the blades one of them may be dull and just pushing the grass down instead of cutting it

Are you sure you have the right blades on the mower? If the blades are too short they will leave a strip. I would make sure they are correct, if they are one could be bent. Sharpening may help but that is not what it sounds like to me.

Here's another thought.
Some mowers have three blades, the belt or drive pulley to the center one may have loosened. Take a look on the top of the deck.
CAREFULLY now, engine off!

Adjust the blade. The grass may be too high to get even cuts. Sharpen the blade with a power tool such as a high powered drimmel with a sandpaper bit, dye grinder or the such.

Park the mower on a flat spot . Check to make sure your deck is level. No amount of blades and belts will solve a bent or uneven deck.

Sounds like your blades need to be sharpened and aligned. Try that first before you put too much money into it.
