Our dog found a snake about 8 inches long and killed it. But is it true that where one is there is more? What do we do to keep them out of our yard?

I saw on TV how you can make your own food and bug repellant for roses but couldn't write fast enough and missed a lot of it. Some of the food was made up of bonemeal, epson salts, beer, syrup etc and the repellant was liquid soap and some other stuff. Anyone know the ingredients and the amounts?

Thanks for all your answers, our soil as i said is very hard clay and the grass nr the edges of the borders is always wet so its like walking on soggy grass even in the height of summer. The house is around 50yrs old and is sort of established with lots of trees and loads of connifers however hardly any other plants will grow, I'm not sure if its down to the clay or to the roots of the connifers. We have been here 5yrs and have been trying for the past 3yrs to get something decent to grow, certain plants that don't have deep roots do ok but not brilliant

The fruit trees in my yard really out of hand, there're too tall now , and I would like to replace them with ones that don't grow tall. I have some young saplings that I could maybe use. I heard some where that if you cut the tap root while it is young, you could stunt it's growth. true or false?

I am fortunate enough to live where there are no creepy-crawlies, but have a friend plagued with fire ants. She has two dogs.
Please no 'gas in the nest' or boiling water, etc..
This needs to be broadcast on the lawn.

growing right in the middle of my lilac bush?? I've tried digging it up and using a hatchet to chop it out. I only made it angry and it grew back in about 5 different places. I want it gone permanently but without ruining my lilac bush at the same time.
