yes they will if the sand is wet. Soot is best if you can find any these days

What kind of sand? Coarse and dry, probably not. Fine and wet, yes.
I assume the real gist of your question is "what can I do to deter slugs?". Set out saucers, or old tuna cans, or any small containers with some beer. Slugs will crawl in and drown themselves.

yes. But they we not cross sand filings, (saw dust) or copper wiring.

they are not very fond of salt either as it kills them
