Our dog found a snake about 8 inches long and killed it. But is it true that where one is there is more? What do we do to keep them out of our yard?

Lowes carries a product called Snake Away, and it dosen't hurt the snakes, they just won't come into your yard. (they hate the way it smells) Snake Away is pet, and kid safe too.

Not necessarily true. However, you can avoid snakes in the yard by keeping the grass mowed, move any bird houses away from the house, move any woodpiles and/or clutter away from the house, do everything you can to avoid attracting mice to your yard, such as not leaving dog food out, and keeping trash cans closed.

If you are in a rural area, buy some guinea fowl. They will catch them.

Snakes are great for your yard. They keep out rodents and insects. They're much more afraid of you than you are of them and will never bother you. They're obviously not poisonous or the dog would be gone. I wouldn't worry.

Make sure there are no rodents around and if there are still snakes grab it by the tail (Alive!) and throw it in someone else's yard. Don't kill them because if you kill one more circle around it and eat it. Then those go into your yard.

I had a neighbor put rock salt around his property three years in a row and never had a snake after that even though it was great location for them

Moth balls, but I agree with Ed J.
There was a snake on my girlfriends property. I tried to tell her it was harmless, however, due to her fear of snakes,it had to go.I felt sorry for the poor thing but it was her or the snake. What can you do?

You would rather have mice? Snakes are good, even if they are creepy! I'd scream if I saw one but I sure would rather have them than mice.

Get rid of the rodents or whatever they are eating. They don't venture too far from home, so there are probably more.
