I am painting vertical stripes on one wall in my bedroom. I already have a lighter base color on the wall. I am painting the stripes on in a darker shade. I want the stripes to be two different widths, the darker color being the wider stripe. If the 1st and last stripe (the corner stripes) are the darker color, and my wall is 136", what widths can I use for each color?

My closet doors are huge! They are 91 1/2 " tall and vary in width from closet to closet. I want to build them myself because I believe they will be a little cheaper and I love custom things. Any advice on how to do this? Interesting materials? Web sites that have pics for inspiration? Personal stories and experiences? I would appreciate anything! Thank you in advance!

My exterior basement walls do not sit directly against the poured foundation walls due to a floating slab basement. Are firestops required at the top of the walls and also behinde the walls to prevent fires from spreading? The framing was done up to 8' with 9' actual basement height then the 8' walls were nailed with brackets to the 9' floor joists.

I chose the color for my kitchen/dining room in a deep red. The dining room wall was panelled, and the kitchen was sheetrock. The contractor chose a high gloss finish and it is too shiny and almost looks greasy. Is there any way to take the shine out of the paint? Can I paint over a coat of high gloss with the same color in another finish?

If I can't fix the shine problem easily, is there anything I can put in the room (i.e. decorations) to get some of the glare out of the room?

I started witha shabby chic look in my bedroom early last year and it turned out to look like a 3 year old girls bedroom (yes i overdid pink)

Im trying to give my room a more grownup look this year and really love that old french romantic look (which is close to shabby) but Im afraid that i'll mess it up again.. Any ideas?
