the original reason people began staining wood was to make cheap wood look like dark expensive hardwood.

I have no reason to stain wood, as it hides the beautiful wood grain. I just use tung oil.

To get a different colour. Some stains are protective as well. You have some stain you want to use up.

The only one I can think of is if you have wooden floors and you don't make the toilet in time, that's what happened to me, what a horrific Christmas that was.
