If it is "steel" rather than cast iron you cannot smash it up. You could cut it up with a disc cutter but that would create enormous amount of sparks. I suspect you are right that it will be difficult!!
If it is cast iron get a very heavy sledge hammer and a strong friend or two. Start smashing on the edge. Wear eye protection.

It is most probably fixed to the wall with 2 brackets, you will have to knock some plaster off to locate these. the feet of the bath are most probably screwed down as well. If it is a steel bath, then it won't break up. If it is cast iron , which is pretty thick, you will have to smash it up to get it out. Be carefol if you have to do this because of flying bits of enamel which are very sharp. Use a small sledgehammer, and knock the edges off first, then start on the inside. Protect your eyes!

If it is steel you will never smash it up. A welding cutter would be the best so you may decide to get it out whole. Cast iron smashes easily. You need the biggest hammer you can find - sledge hammer type of thing. Disconnect it from the water supply first and turn the water off

Is it steel, or cast iron ?. First advitise it in you local paper, somebody may have a use for it. If you have no takers, then if it cast iron, you can with a 7b hammer , and with all the necessary face protection, smash it up, believe me it will with one big thump, smash up.if its steel, can it be lifted ? Remember somebody lifted it in there, I dont think they built the house around the bath

A better alternative to breaking it up would be to ask someone who keeps horses if they would like it for a trough. they would probably help you move it and save you problems of disposal.
