Decorating & Remodeling - January 2007

I have recently purchased a very small home...as a single mom it was the best I could do. However, lately, a lot of my family and friends (the same ones that told me it was smart to buy this house) have said that I will have a hard time making a profit on the home when I resale. I have no plans to resale until at least 5 years...but what are some inexpensive and possible do it yourself improvements I could make that would result in increasing the value of the home. I bought a wall border for my daughter's room, on the package it said pre-pasted but when I moistened the back of the border it wasn't sticky. I've never hung a border before so I'm not quite sure what to do....

I just painted my kitchen a deep red color (Raspberry Truffle from Benjamin Moore). My floor tile is a stone with light and dark brown and some cream and grey mixed in. I started to paint the ajoining hall and entry a taupe color and it looks awful. I think the red is making it have an orange tint to it and making it look like a flesh color. I am thinking of painting it a mustard yellow color but am afraid it will look orange because of the red. Any suggestions?

my dresser is wood and there's no finish on it, what kind of paint should i use? i painted my desk which is the same kind of wood and finish but its peeling and chipping right off. I think i used satin paint for that. Would spray paint be good?

We just removed a wall to make one room out of our small dining and living room. It looks great as far as light goes. But I need help in color. I now have both area's painted light creamy yellow. I love the color. Our new taylored couch and side chair are camel color, the rug in the living room area is a medium mustard color and wood floors in the dining area. All new before we took the wall down so if possible I'd like to work around what we have.
I'd like to keep the walls light but would like some help in colors for the walls and maybe an accent color for a wall or more. We have a gas fire place that we can put any place but we decided the dining room wall is were it fits in the best with what we have and it does look nice in the dining room plus you can see it from the living area. I need help with style and color for window treatments, wall color, and any other help to make it look inviting and stylish. I do not want to go country. I like as much light as possible.

I have a one bedroom - one bathroom apartment. I have several broadway posters framed and a lot of collectabiles that I want to display. In the bathroom I have a theater inspired shower curtin. I want to make curtains out of canvas drop-cloth, but need to find some large grommets for the hanging holes. Also, where can I find the grommet machine/puncturer? The large grommet size would need to be about 1 inch diameter.
