you would first have to sheathe the brick in a smooth wood or mdf facing anchoring it to the brick with concrete anchors. then fill all joints and screw heads and sand to a totally smooth surface. then put at least one coat of good primer over it. as far as making it appear as black marble, the technique involved is difficult to pull off and make it look authentic. I'd suggest you practice the technique on some scrap pieces before you attempt the fireplace. I would suggest that you put a row of 6x6 ceramic tiles around the perimeter of the fireplace opening, because for safety reasons you should not bring the painted wood facing too close to the actual fire.

i grow to be gonna do black and white checkerboard marble tiles in my bathing room, yet because of the fact the marble grow to be a million/2 inch thick, it could have meant wanting to advance the rest room and bath, and which skill you're able to desire to accomplish a little plumbing artwork. additionally i found that marble is truly somewhat gentle and truthfully broken, so i desperate to purely use vinyl tiles. If i ever determine to do some thing diverse, it may be black granite tiles that are significantly better than marble. i think of i could use the black marble tiles on the wall fairly than the floor.

just lay black marble right on top of brick!
we use to do this on spec houses, that allready had brick f/p installed, & new buyer wanted marble / ganite we would have the tile man just lay over the brick!

you could try making an mdf box to fit over your existing fire place like a cover(make sure you use fire retardent mdf) and then do a paint effect on top.paint it black to start with then use grey and white paint with a feather to create the veins.you will need to mix some scumble glaze in with the paint to prolong its drying time. then varnish over the top. saw this once on a make over programme and it looked amazing ! good luck!
