I LOVE this organization info (including tips and strategies) from Martha Stewart's site. I have used a ton of these ideas in setting up my new house. They are divided up by room:
http://www.marthastewart.com/page.jhtml?type=learn-cat&id=cat442&navLevel=4&navHistory=cat2%2Bcat246%2Bcat301&site=
If you look on the menu on the left side of the site, under organizing, you can also click on "closets and drawers" to get tips for getting those areas together.
Here is a place on her site that references "tough clutter spots": http://www.marthastewart.com/page.jhtml?type=content&id=channel2520039
Surf around and see what else they have - there is a great organization system in there somewhere for cleaning too. How to get the most done in the least amount of time. Look under Homekeeping 101 for other great ideas.
Good luck! It's all about taking the first step and making a plan.

There is a site called www.flylady.net
Through flylady, I learned about the 27 fling boogie. Here's what you do...you just start to boogie through your house with a garbage bag. You do not stop until you have thrown away at leat 27 things. BELIEVE me, there will be at LEAST 27 items that need to be chucked. You do this at least once a week. Ask yourself...do I use it? Do I need it? Do I have 2 of them? Do I really want it? You will be amazed at how much "junk" we are all stashing away for no apparent reason. After you throw away 27 jusn items, boogie back through and pick up 27 items that you could donate or give away. Once you do that, boogie through and pick up all the stuff that you have borrowed and need to return to it's owner, pick up the library books that need to be returned, pick up the blouse that you have meant to return to the store because it does not fit, etc, etc, etc. After a few days of getting rid of the unnecessary "stuff" that crowds our personal world, it is soooooooo much easier to ORGANIZE what is left with the wonderful baskets and shelves and trays and what have you. I LOVE the 27 fling boogie. Sounds crazy, but it works!

I have 3 words for you. BASKETS, BASKETS, BASKETS. They work great for storage, keeping clutter in one place, sorting, just about everything. Match the color scheme or decor in each room. It makes it easy for kids to clean up too.

Get some nice storage containers. Avoid the plain a boring plastics and choose something suitable and attractive instead.

There are many things you can do, go to a local home improvement store and look through their magazines, they often help me out. I also added a link to a good website. Hope this helps you out. Good luck!
