It is normally cheaper to Refinish and Restain hardwood floors in ideal situations. Although, sometimes depending on the severity of the damage it may be smarter and more cost effective in the "long-term" to replace the flooring with a more up-to-date, warranty backed, pre-fiinished hardwood product. If the wood has ever been subject to any type of water damage or the home is subject to many leveling problems it may be smart to inquire and research the Engineered Hardwood Products. New hardwood products ( 3/4 Solid ), may be sanded and restained, although hardwood manufacturers are manufacturing these new products with poly-urethane coatings and other treatments to keep the likelihood of refinishing to a minimum. But new products CAN be sanded and restained. 3/4 solids you may resand somewhere between 3-4 times depending on the depth of sanding and 1/2 engineered products may be sanded 1-2 times. Hope this helps!

Well it depends on how badly, the sanders can take about 1/8" off getting rid of any imperfections, the cost is about $3-4 dollars a sq foot replacement is about 10-25 dollars a sq foot. Plus a huge job to remove old flooring, much better to refinish. If you have a really bad floor a floating laminated floor can be put on top. Also you can not really sand the new types of flooring you need to replace, as they are only 1/8 of an inch or thiner.
Newer laminated flooring can be refreshed with the companies products.

If the floor is pitted/rotted/dry rotted or there are too many layers of paint then it is possible to spend to much in product, repair, and manual labor before even getting to sanding and refinish you may be better off replacing the floors entirely.
In some cases though(as in my own) an ugly carpet and to much carpet glue w/ one inch birds eye maple underneath, the work was definitely worth it.

Generally it is more cost efficient and often as astetically pleasing to have the floors sanded and re-finished. If you wish, you can even have the colour changed at that time.
