1880 Victorian, from the outside clearly needing some work but looks like it could be an amazing house. Roof reportedly about 5 years old, siding kind of dingy but in decent repair. Haven't seen inside yet. I have some money (not a ton), not a lot of knowledge but willing to learn, willing to work hard but not if it's not worth trying to save. What conditions are dealbreakers, and how can I tell by looking? What signs should I be keeping my eye open for?

I have two end tables that I recently purchased second hand. I'm not sure of the type of wood they are but they are currently stained a somewhat dark brown. I would like them to be a very dark brown almost black. I sanded one of the tables and tried using a product that's a stain and polyurethane in one. The finish came out horrible though. I used a stain sponge and it left lint in the finish. Also the color just isn't right. It's not dark enough. So now I'm thinking maybe a paint would be better. I just want the dark brown color to be consistent throughout. Any suggestions on what would be better for the type of look I want? Stain or paint and what type should I use?

I am painting my living room... Is it better to paint your walls before you gloss your skirting boards and door frames or is it better to do it the other way round?

Stupid question but can I use interior paint outside? I bought a gallon of interior paint to paint a closet door, now I have a lot left and was wondoring if I could paint my wooden bullked(outside door to cellar) door with it. I hate to waste paint.

i need the name of the sofa type thing which is not on feet but it is directly on the ground. It is basically used for people who sit on the ground. it is like a rectangular matress (about 3 inches high) which is put along the side of the wall and then pillows are put along the back of it for leaning purposes.

Actually I want to buy one for the house but dont know where to go.
I live toronto.
Thanks

I'm having a decorating crisis. My living room has cream/off-white walls (can't change them its an apartment), and these kind of dark, forest green couches (inhereted them & can't afford new ones; can't slipcover them they're recliners). Decided to do the living room in sort of an exotic tropical theme to justify all that green. For example we have a little tropical houseplant in one corner, little wooden tribal figurine, (also wood endtables) etc.

What I can't figure out is what to do for curtains. The walls are too light to pull off white, brown makes the room too dark, the beige we looked at was too blah, and there is already too much green in the room to consider it on the curtains. I'm thinking of getting roman shades in a cypress or bamboo material, but would that look stupid over the venitian blinds that the apartment came with? I want to let a lot of light in and still have privacy (in the other rooms we pull the curtains back but leave the blinds down). Help!! Thanks!

I watched "My Parents' House" on HGTV. On "Bedroom Oasis" episode, they painted the bathroom a shade of wine. Here is the link of the photo. Can anyone help me with getting the exact shade of this room?

I am decorating a little boy's bedroom in the theme of a ship, & along with the nets, anchor, etc. I need a wooden beer keg (barrel type) to use as a bedside table. I would prefer to order it online if I can find where to do that at, but will travel to purchase one if I can find merchants thru-out the North Ga. mountains & down around Atlanta, Ga who carry the wooden kegs. Any input for both online and physical purchasing locations will be greatly appreciated. Diane

I want the overall look of the house to be welcoming and "homey".

Do I make the living space the focus by painting the garage doors a darker/muted color, separating the two areas and making the garage "retreat"

... or do I hide the garage by painting it the same color as the house, blending it into the living space?

Some think that suburban life is a great strain. The hellish commuting, road rage, ugly big box stores, endless copies
of the same franchises(Chili's, Best Buy, Applebees, ect.),
bratty kids that seem miserable and don't listen to anyone,
crabby SUV-navigating soccer moms, and lastely, not knowing
your neighbors....to me, the saddest thing is when suburbanities
come home to their cookie-cutter McMansion and click the garage
door closed, as if they are actually turning off the outside world
like a television.....these characteristics were already here in
70's suburban-land when I grew up, but now it's much worse.
Now kids have no independence, and are monitored electronically
like cattle with RFID tags. We used to go bike-riding for miles
(without those stupid little helmets) for miles by 3rd grade.
We had streets and sidewalks to play on. Now, new subdivisions
have no sidewalks, and there is no way for kids to get anywhere
cause things are so sprawled out.....so sad.....
