A serger is what finishes the seam on the inside of a garment. Look at the inside of a store bought garment and you'll see what I mean.

Many uses for a serger.

If you take a look inside a t-shirt you own and see the threads that encircle the edge where the seam is, that is made by a serger. It allows you to sew neat, trimmed seams that will move with the item - particularly knits and swimwear. The seam will stretch with the garment as it is worn. You can also make a frilly lettuce edge on shirts or a rolled hem as seen on some formal wear or table linens. Some more expensive sergers also come equipped with a cover stitch - this will allow you to make a hem like what you see on t-shirts and at the edges of swimsuits.
