I want the overall look of the house to be welcoming and "homey".

Do I make the living space the focus by painting the garage doors a darker/muted color, separating the two areas and making the garage "retreat"

... or do I hide the garage by painting it the same color as the house, blending it into the living space?

I THINK I JUST ANSWERED YOUR OTHER QUESTION!

DIFFERENT TRIM WOULD LOOK FINE BUT YOU DON'T WANT THE GARAGE TO TAKE CENTER STAGE. YOU WANT YOUR FRONT DOORS TO BE THE CENTER OF ATTENTION. WHEN YOUR GUESTS COME TO VISIT THEY WON'T FEEL LIKE THEY ARE GOING TO THE GARAGE. THEY WILL BE GREETED BY A BEAUTIFUL, WELCOMING FRONT ENTRY.

We live in a subdivision where all the garage doors are the same color as the siding, and I had my doubts when building, but it actually looks really good. But the trim around the garage door contrasts. For example, we have olive green siding and garage door, but buttercream trim. And we can see the garage door just fine when trying to pull up to the garage.

You could also go as far as putting down a better driveway surface, installing new light fixtures by the garage door and driveway, or improving the landscaping around your house.

Paint the garage the same color. It makes the house look bigger. If you paint it different, you will regret it I think. I used to sell paint for years. Any other questions I am happy to answer.

do a different color for the garage door. Otherwise, it's hard to tell where to drive in to park your car

if your house is one of those ugly new types where the garage door is facing the street, more or less infront of the house - HIDE IT... the front door of the house itself should be contrasting color.. but the ugly garage should be hidden...

I would think contrasting matching colors like your shutters.

Contrast would be better for curbside appeal. Go BOLD!
