Whats the diff? Chair rail is used to protect the wall from chairs. If you aint planning poker parties in there you aint gotta worry. You are simply putting it in for decoration. Use what trips you!

I don't know about just a chair rail, but I just finished a remodel job on a small bathroom in my house. There was wainscoting in the old room with trim molding along the top of it, and it always appeared too high to me. When I did the remodel I still used wainscoting to cover some holes in the 150 year old wall, but I kept it much lower, and it made the room seem much larger. I'd say keep a rail no higher than 36 inches off the floor or just a bit lower.

Depends on the height of the ceiling.........a chair rail should be installed at around 36" from the floor.....about 3 inches in width should be more than large enough. Depends on what your planning on doing below and above the chair rail... wallpaper below and paint above? Venetian plaster below or above an ornate chair rail looks awesome...good luck with that one...so many options I know... L.Butler
