We have an English Tudor style home with dark wood trim around the house. I want to preserve the style and authenticity.Painting the kitchen cabinets will break the pattern/theme so I'm looking for alternatives ideas to brighten the kitchen.

I'd recommend painting the room in a light or medium tone paint. The color is really going to depend on what else you have in the room to coordinate with. Pick out some of your favorite light colors that you think might work. Then buy a quart or get a sample of whatever color you like best and paint about a 12" x 12" cardboard square with that color of paint. Put some blue painter's tape on the back of the cardboard and stick it up around the room to see how you like it against major objects in the room. Leave it up for a couple of days. You want to see it in sunlight, shadow, and with just your kitchen lights on. The lighting will change how it looks. You can try one color at once or multiple colors at once to compare colors. After a couple of days of hanging on the wall, it's easy to decide which color you like best.

Another option might be to consider wallpaper. You can still keep the pattern or theme with the pattern of the wallpaper, but use a light colored wallpaper.

How about painting your kitchen a bright buttery yellow. I think that would look absolutely lovely with the dark cabinets. Also, you could strategically place bright flowers and plants throughout your kitchen to liven it up. Or on your island, have a wax bowl of brightly colored fruit.

Lemon yellow anything, even if it's a clear glass bowl on your table filled with lemons. I love a yellow kitchen. I adore Tudor as well - that a tough one! Good luck with the redecorating!

You might look into L.E.D. lighting. It looks decorative when run along wall tops or around windows and cabinets, but puts out a tremendous amount of light with relatively efficient electricity usage
