During the holidays I turned off my water heater while I was on vacation. Since I got back it now periodically goes out when I turn the hot water on (especially when getting ready for a shower) and won't come back on for 20-30min. This has never happened before. Do you think this glitch might have been caused by staying off over the holidays?

One son moved out and other wants to move into basement. Naturally after a few years, the painted walls have some spots that need to be taken care of and just a general cleaning. Want to clean the area but not sure how to with the paint he originally used which was Ralph Lauren faux suede paint with a gritty type of finish.

I'm going to do a little remodeling and was curious as to which is usually done first. I would think the walls would be first so you don't take the chance of damaging the new floor but would like other opinions.

Is it true that no matter what you have your heater set on it wont increase your bill. Meaning if I have my heater set on 70 once the house heats to 70 the heater will not kick on more to maintain the temputure of 70 as apposed to if its on say 74?

Or will it actually increase my bill if I set the heat at 74 will it have to kick on more to maintain the temp of 74 as apposed to 70?

Hope this didnt confuse you. I have mine set on 70 and live in a large home my kids say its a little chilly. So my husband told me to turn the heat up to 72-74 but with our monthly bill already running 100 dollars I dont want it to increase drasticly will setting the temp higher make a huge differance in our heating bill?

I know it may vary between species so I know I will be working with red and white oak, cherry, walnut and hickory. I am building a solar kiln in the late summer or fall however, I am finding premium logs now. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

we have some pretty garbagy wood - but it's wood, it was free, and so we're using it. The fireplace is form and function (want to look nice/help heat the room). Any thoughts on building the best, most smoke-free fire?

I have a steeply sloping back garden and want to terrace it by creating two 'steps' from/into the slope. I was thinking of using reclaimed railway sleepers to create the retaining wall of each 'step'. I realise I will need to bolt the sleepers together side by side/ontop of each other...but, do I need to sink them into the ground or anchor them someway? Or will their own weight keep them steady and keep in the earth?

Each retaining wall will only be two sleepers high, so 2 foot apprx.
