Hi Delilah,

removing stains from marble is a common problem here in Spain where we have acres of it. It is not always easy. First of all you need to know what caused the stains. Hard water alone is not usually enough to cause the loss of shine-the water here is very high in lime content, yet the marble stairs we have do retain a good shine.

Abrasive detergents can affect the shine level and it is difficult to recover if this is the cause. Buy and use only those cleaning products that specifically mention they are OK for marble. This will prevent any worsening.

There are products available in Spain which claim they can restore the shine, though it is obviously better not to lose it in the first place.

If the stain is caused by foodstuffs (red wine is a killer!) it can be helped by soaking the stain with white wine (vintage unimportant-use a cheap one!) Other products, if the stain is actually caused by hard water would include 'anti-cal' cleaners such as Calgon (I think that is available, from memory, in the USA-often as an additive to help your washing machine/dishwasher from 'liming up'

As I said it can be a problem...if you know for sure what caused the stain I can ask around the village what removes that particlar stain-the ladies here are very resourcful.

Hope you're successful, good luck.

Just e-mail if you need anything further, I'll try to help.
