If it is electric, your heater is probably blowing a fuse because when you turned it off while gone it probably had lime build up happen which makes the element trip the fuse you can keep changing fuses but eventually you will either have to replace the element and I suggest you replace both at the same time (upper and lower elements) but it is a very timely juob as I have been doing it on and off for a few years now, finally am getting new water heater but not till Tuesday so am boiling water for everything needing HOT water! After you replace elements then it will be good for another 4-8 years I think!

You don't mention what type of water heater - electric or gas?
Electric heaters are simple, just the thermostat and the element. Most likely the thermostat is faulty, and needs to be replaced. A handy person could do this, and the part is not expensive. Just be sure the power is cut off before anyone's fingers get inside the electrics!
For gas, the problem is more difficult to diagnose, but it should be looked at by a pro.

Depend what you mean by "goes out" - no hot water for your shower? If the water is hot enough, then the flame does NOT come on.
Also, check the temperature knob on the water heater, perhaps you might have turn that off also.

Is it an electric heater? You may have a bad element. Is it tripping the electrical box switch? If so you have a bad element. Elements in a electric heater are next to nearly impossible to get out. You may need a new heater.

Does the pilot light go out? Or you just run out of hot water?
If you are running out of hot water, and it takes 20 minuets for it to recover. The thermostat on the tank may be set too low, turn it up, and see if it helps.
