I've had bad teeth my entire life. For the past 10 yrs. or so I've had regular cleanings twice a year and even though I'm hopelessly addicted to Pepsi, I do rinse my mouth out with water after I eat and drink, plus I chew sugarless gum after every meal as well. I don't get much calcium because dairy gives me bad stomach aches and I'm also a vegetarian who doesn't particularly like vegetables, so I eat a lot of pasta, salad and fruit. What else should I be eating to make my teeth stronger?

cheers,
Shauna!

p.s. I KNOW Pepsi is bad for me, I really do. But I'm addicted to it and I get bad headaches anytime I try to give it up. Plus I absolutely LOVE the stuff and I don't want to give it up. I don't like diet Pepsi so that's not an option. And I rinse my mouth out with water and chew sugarless gum EVERY time I drink one, so I think my teeth issues have more to do with what I'm not eating rather than what I am.

I'm operating under the assumption that all dentists are not equal - that some are more skilled and more ethical. How do I go about choosing the best dentist? What I mean by skill should be obvious. What I mean by ethical is someone who will not tell the patient that he or she needs an unnecessary service / someone who will not overcharge for their services / etc. Do those dentists who charge less for their services possess less skill? If a practice has multiple dentists, are you able to request a specific one?

my tooth was being prepared for a crown & while drilling the pain was excruciating the further the dentist drilled despite the fact she had to give 3 injections to try & numb it. The dentist filled it temporarily it but I have to go back next week. As i've always experienced pain & discomfort even when 'numbed' i'm beginning to think dentistry is never painless. Am I correct??

I've recently had major dental work done, scaling & root planing and a root canal. I'm under the care of a periodontist who recommends regeneration surgery at a cost of almost $6,000! On top of this, my dentist says I need two crowns with my portion after insurance at over $1,000. I've already forked over a hefty chunk for the previous work and don't think I can afford the surgery at this point and probably the crowns too. Do you think it's ok to put off the surgery and get the crowns done first or do the surgery first and wait on the crowns? My periodontist said that if I elect not to have the surgery now, I should come in for 3 month cleanings, which I am sure is a lot more financially managable. Also, anyone ever gone abroad and had dental work done? I may be out of the country for 3 months or more and I know it is much less expensive where I'll be going than here. Prices here are outrageous and I don't live in a high cost of living area either!!!

The Sonicare brush manual recommends brushing for 3 seconds on the front of each tooth at a 45 degree between teeth and gum line. However, putting the brush at that position doesn't clean the entire tooth crowth. So that means another 3 seconds on the crown surface. The brush needs to be at 3 different positions in order to cover the entire outside of a quadrant. Here's the math.

Cleaning outside of one quadrant = 3 positions x 2 (gum + crown) x 3 seconds = 18 sec
Cleaning inside of one quadrant = 3 positions x 2 (gum + crown) x 3 seconds = 18 sec
Cleaning the cutting surface = 2 positions x 3 seconds = 6 sec
Total for a quadrant = 42 sec

And there's a timer that would turn off the brush after 2 minutes. So how exactly can I finish brushing all four quadrants in 2 minutes?

i was wondering, does rinsing your mouth with hydrogen peroxide make your teeth whiter over time? my cousin said that it worked for her. she also said that she got the idea from her friend who was in the army and she said that they used it to keep their teeth clean.

When they put a crown on, they give you the temp crown. Then you come back to get the perm crown. Now the temp was on, my tooth was fine. But now after they put the perm on, my tooth is little sensitive. Is this normal and will this go away?
