Firstly, avoid anything that will discolour your teeth such as coffee, tea, or smoking.

Secondly, make sure you have good oral health and keep your teeth nice and clean.

With that said here are some non-harsh ideas for whitening your teeth – bare in mind even natural treatments for teeth whitening can be harsh to your teeth, such as acid within fruit damaging to your teeth.
Lemon juice is a good example of this, it works by causing your teeth to loose calcium which is what gives teeth their off-white colour, because calcium is important to healthy teeth using such a method can result in tooth decay.
Just bare that in mind when using such methods – again, it's just going back to 'make sure you have good oral health'.
I'd also say to bare in mind some people don't have naturally white teeth, and other people can have treatments at the dentist to improve the problem.

-Baking soda, both good for teeth whitening and oral care, it can be used daily or just once every week to help keep your teeth white and gleaming – you can mix with some Epson salts or essential oils like a little tea tree (only a little as it doesn’t taste too good) or peppermint oil to make a natural whitening toothpaste.

-Lush make toothpaste called White Toothgel that contains salt and vanilla that is really good at whitening your teeth, it also doesn't contain harmful ingredients or fluoride (which in larger quantities can cause tooth damage) http://www.lush.co.uk

-Peroxide, take about 2 teaspoons and swish it around your mouth leaving it in as long as you can stand it, it isn't very pleasant after as it will make your mouth feel dry but it is good at killing off germs too. I would recommend watering this down to avoid some of the 'ugh' factor.

-Strawberries, the acid in the fruit is very good at helping to whiten teeth, mush up with some baking soda and a little cream of tartar and pain the mixture onto your teeth, leaving for a few minutes and then brush teeth immediately afterwards.

-Drink black or green tea, not sure why this works but it helps to remove stains on your teeth, it is also a good alternative to normal tea that adds to staining.

-Sage is also good to for teeth, you can make it into a tooth powder by grinding sage leaves and salt and put into the oven for half an hour on a baking tray.

The way people kept their teeth white in the past, has been to use common house salt. It doesn't taste too good, but it does do the job!
