The Sonicare brush manual recommends brushing for 3 seconds on the front of each tooth at a 45 degree between teeth and gum line. However, putting the brush at that position doesn't clean the entire tooth crowth. So that means another 3 seconds on the crown surface. The brush needs to be at 3 different positions in order to cover the entire outside of a quadrant. Here's the math.

Cleaning outside of one quadrant = 3 positions x 2 (gum + crown) x 3 seconds = 18 sec
Cleaning inside of one quadrant = 3 positions x 2 (gum + crown) x 3 seconds = 18 sec
Cleaning the cutting surface = 2 positions x 3 seconds = 6 sec
Total for a quadrant = 42 sec

And there's a timer that would turn off the brush after 2 minutes. So how exactly can I finish brushing all four quadrants in 2 minutes?

Just turn your brush back on and keep brushing until you are satisfied. Don't wait the full two minutes for the brush to turn off. Just push the "on-off" switch to shut it off when you are done.

Please do not fell insulted by my directions about how to turn the Sonicare off. I've had more than a couple of patients ask me how to do it. They said that the manual was not very clear on this point. I never checked...

I also use a Sonicare. I just don't linger. I start in the lower left and go counterclockwise. I can usually do a 'mouth lap' in around 1:15, then I start over and go around again. I can finish almost two laps before I start to get the pulsing that tells me the 2 minutes are nearly up. I may be missing a spot of crown here or a bit of gum there, but I'm sure it's not the same bits and spots each time so ultimately everythig gets clean.
