Vegetarian & Vegan - September 2006

[Selected]: All categories Food & Drink Vegetarian & Vegan

With all the ignorant replies from meat eaters, you may wonder why should you even become vegan. First of all, it is the most healthiest diet you can be on. Plant-based foods are the source for all the essential amino acids, and they also have significant amounts of protein. Matter of fact, one medium sized avocado has more useable protein than a large steak. Meat eaters use the protein propaganda to try and justify the murder of innocent animal beings. As far as the B12 thing goes, that is also another lie created by meat eaters to scare you into thinking you need to eat meat. B12 is actually made by a bacteria and is prevalent in nature in the soil. By consuming raw organic fruits and vegetables, you can get all the B12 your body needs.

I strongly urge each and every person out there who is considering vegetarianism to go ahead and make the change. By becoming a vegetarian, you can save 1000 animal lives in your life time.

Case in point:

Someone recently wrote on Yahoo answers:
" I have not ridiculed anyone for choosing not to eat meat. However I think alot of vegans take themselves and their eating habits too seriously and project them onto others without warrant. Kinda like gays and christians."

Looks like ridicule to me.

As anyone ever forced or tricked you to eating meat? Have you ever been ridiculed for your lifestyle?

We do not eat red meat or chicken. Also, do I need to boil corn first? Some say yes, and some say no. I have seen it done both ways. In the past, we've done vegetable skewers, cheese pizza, tofu hotdogs, baked beans, apples, sweet potatoes and half-baked biscuits. Smoked salmon on bagels as well and tuna melts, plus vegetarian chilli dogs and shrimp and crab. Normally, I do a whole fish or fish fillet in the oven.

I don't drink, smoke, or do any for of drugs. My one vice is fast food of ever kind. I have weened myself from soft drinks to sweet tea, and now primarily green tea. I am now wanting to try a more vegetarian diet for the health of myself and my children. My children already are not big meat eaters so it will not be hard for them. My problem is I don't know where to get good tasting vegetarian like meals thay my childeren and I will like. Can anyone give some advice towards this issue?

I just stopped eating meat about 2 months ago. I have never gotten so much crap in my life about something I chose to do! When I went on a strict diet 2 years ago and lost a bunch of weight, people were cheering me on -- now even my own family and boyfriend are teasing me and saying I am in love with bees, or I want to change the way they eat, which I have not done.
Why is everyone so defensive? Why can't people let me just not eat meat? I am not killing babies or anything...I just want to not eat meat anymore. Why do they even care? I try to just ignore them, but they push me to the point where it really makes me wonder why they are so tormenting on this seemingly insignificant lifestyle change.
Anyone else experience this? Will it end?

Please no one post their remarks about how much vegan suck and we all should eat nothing but meat, blah, blah blah. I'm looking specifically for parents who have/are raising vegetarian and vegan children. What kind of problems or benefits have you come across? Has your child always gotten enough of the nutrients they've needed? What if they're staying with a non-vegetarian family? I'm just wondering how others have gone about rasing little veggies...
