Being a vegan saves water too! Animals, especially large cattle, use up so much of our resources.
Think about what you are doing when you consume factory farmed meat (the majority of what's out there). Those animals were never ever happy and died violent deaths. Will it make you violent too? Who knows?
If not vegan or vegetarian, it's probably all around good to reduce meat consumption any way you can. My Uncle has gout and high high cholesterol. Most of my family suffers from some health related issue due to the high cholesterol consumption they had whilst growing up. My Uncle was even told he couldn't eat fatty shellfish anymore, but he is so accustomed to his eating habits that he doesn't want to stop. So the earlier the better.
If you do want to eat meat, buy sustainable stuff. You can rest assured those animals were treated with dignity while they were alive.

Wonderful way of putting it! I am a vegetarian and hve been for a couple years now. It was a hard change at first. I was not well informed- only recently have I switched to, say, yogurt brands without gelatin, digital camers instead of ones with film, pleather shoes, etc.
I try to eat lots of organic foods and especially walnuts and beans, as they have high protein and B12. I did not know about the large avocado thing: very interesting!
Going vegetarian also helps out the environment! Over half of our water is used for animals in the beef and poultry industry, and yet they still have an insufficient quantity of water! If they were in the wild, they could find sources of water. Switching from a Hummer H2 to a hybrid saves some C02 emmisions- going from a steak-eater to vegetarian for the same amount of time, saves even more!
I would recommend that everybody out there considering becoming a vegetarian or vegan gets proper information first. PETA owns several wonderful sites, and http://GoVeg.com/ does the best job of explaining everything.

I agree with you.
I myself am a lacto-ovo vegetarian and loving it!
Many tell me that because I don't eat animals it does not make a difference.
According to them animals will still be slaughtered(in other words they are saying that it is pointless). But what they don't know is that what they tell me encourages me even more!
I believe it does make a huge difference.
I do not like telling people to become vegetarian/vegan because I respect each and every ones choices but if they are considering making the transition then I encourage them and give them tips.

PREACH IT BROTHER!!! lol... And to the guy that thinks "running your vegetables through a pig first..." is more economic- it takes over 70% of the earth's grains to feed the farm animals bred for food. If we quit forcing cows to give birth to "veal" as soon as they have had the last calf, the animal population would naturally decrease. It is only as high as it is now because we make it that way by excessive breeding!!! As the number of animals decreased, more grains, vegetables, water, and legumes would be accesible to the human population. The production of meat is as environmentally sound as dumping trash in the ocean. Vegetarianism is more than the best way to live- it is the ONLY way to preserve ourselves and the earth we live in...

Why be a vegan .. well it is more nutricous for you, you will not have large amounts of fat, sodium , sugars..etc. Veggies and fruits are better for you body and is good for keeping the weight down. And also, considering that you don't have any hereditary problems, you should have a longer life span then ones who eat things that are not good for you.

Thank You!! I am happy there are other people out there that think about the fact that God's innocent little creatures have to endure so much pain and suffering just because someone feels like having a hot dog tonight.. not too mention the fact that the meat eating diet destroys rainforests and that millions of people are starving when we could have fed them the grains fed to animals..so that they can be eaten?? sounds wrong. Also if your REALLY THAT worried about B12, buy a supplement. Many companies produce vegan and vegetarian supplements...

I agree! I'm vegan. For each year of being vegetarian, an acre of rainforest is saved, because factory farms cut down rainforest for places for their heat and energy and stuff. It can make singers voices clearer. You're less likely to get cancer, have a stroke or heart attack.

are you talking about eating vegan or raw?
people can be vegan and eat overly processed foods and such...
B12 can be an easy fix by consuming nutritional yeast.
I was reading that for every yr you don't eat animal products, it's like walking/biking to work/everywhere...basically...you are saving that many lives and that much pollution by not eating meat.
as far as being better than everyone...you are actually better not portraying that it's healthier for animals, but that it IS healthier for humans. (humans being selfish sentient beings)...
ie-rather than say "you are murdering innocent animals" (which causes them to bring out their bible and retort as they deem fit)...
you would say instead..."meat nowadays is fed hormones and treated with chemicals that are dangerous and not meant for human consumption. They contribute to pollution that makes the earth less habitable for humans as well as the animals."
examples: Bovine Growth Hormone.
How it gets into the human body?
dairy
cheese
beef.
why?
it helps plump up the cows for consumption.
issues with it being in humans:
even HGH (human growth hormone) causes cancer at an extraordinary rate! Avoid all growth hormones.
Before recommending veganism or even vegetarianism, recommend that a person eat Free-Range, Organic meats.
At least in this scenario, to a point, it's more humane, and not ruining the human genes!!!!
Again, as I said, people are selfish...they see things in black and white.
I'd go vegan all over again for health reasons, but if I were to go vegan for animal welfare, I'd need to be taught it at a very early age, when I was more susceptible to feeling bad for the animals.
(I've been mildly omnivore my whole life, but would take the vegetarian dish over a meat dish anyday due to what I saw at an early age with my grandpa's cows and calves).

i was vegan for 6 years, vegetarian for 6 years previous to being vegan. i started on my journey when i was 14. well, i was pretty well informed about getting enough vitamins and protein and what not in your daily diet. well, to make a long story short, i was about 7 months pregnant with my second child, was taking my prenatals, eating enough for 4 people=), and the doctor told me i was anemic.for me, it was do or die--literally. i was at extremely high risk of hemmoraghing during labor. after all those years, i took my first bite of flesh in 12 years. i ate salmon. it was scary. but i realized that if i wanted to survive, i needed to do this. we as humans are much like bears. we eat predominantly plant foods. but we also have the teeth to knaw and chew flesh. there's nothing wrong with it. i was dedicated to being vegan, but as soon as i incorporated a little 'flesh' in my diet, i felt stronger. my mind felt good. now...i do admit that i still steer clear from eating beef as much as possible. and pork is just gross. but i'll eat lobster, salmon, and various sushi dishes every once in awhile. i think that americans especially consume too many animal products and it is really not necessary. but i'm not so hardcore as i use to be. i still eat vegetarian food, although i've lost my taste for the soy products. but we(my family) eat a lot of fresh organic foods, which is the best wholesome food a person can eat. especially if it is seasonal. it is a hard road, considering animal products are everywhere,in processed foods and in non food products, that i understand your compassion. but it is a difficult lifestlye to maintain so rigidly.good luck to you.

what we tend to ferget is that animals are food. there is a thing called the food chain. we are on top. plain and simple. we needed animal protein as we are evolving since it was redily available. we needed their fur to keep warm. wearing fur is one thing i would only if I ate the rest of the animal first. but back to my point. there is no proof that going vegan makes you healthier. we need animal proteing for our muscles and animal fat to make our hormones. and the fact the you say that an avocado has more usable protein is laughable
