I'm more interested in having a career as an international teacher.
Not one of those 1-year stints in Asia.

Thanks!

Instead of helping children to problemsolve with other children step by step, teachers solve the problem by scolding them or telling them what to do and what not to do and what they should have done. Instead of understanding why children misbehave and helping them find a better solution, teachers punish or reward the behavior. They focus on the bad behavior and react to it in a way that doesn't help children grow and instead affect self esteem. Teachers need to do more than punish and reward behavior. Children are not animals. Check out a doggy training video and you'll see that they use the same discipline techniques used on children. If the children sit when they are supposed to and stay seated they get a , verbal reward "good job". If they help out or finish a task, they get a gummy bear or something good to eat (doggy bone, or pat ) instead of seeing the contribution they had when they helped. Is it just me or is there a problem with out school system?

I am looking for an intersting lesson plan for 1st or second grade using caluculators. (To share at a workshop I am attending.) I have a couple of books on this, but I don't want to bring the "same old - same old" that other people might be using.

Three students went to my boss to complain about me without speaking with me first. They said I was very nice and had a good heart, but was not using the book (I was using a number of handouts in addition to the book), was not giving specific answers and that they weren't learning anything. My boss told me not to get upset about it -- she was just relaying their concerns, particularly about the book. These students did not come back to class the next night, but have since returned. I want to transfer them out, as it has created bad blood, as well as creating the idea among the other students that the "inmates run the asylum." What do you think -- transfer -- which I have the legal right to do -- or not. I don't know why they came back -- they could have easily gone to another class.

I have a teacher who, never teaches. Just tell us to do this and this and spends the rest of the class doing God knows what. Every time a student asks a question she says that they are stupid and the question is too dumb to get an answer. No these are not exaggerations. What do I do?
