I will be a first year teacher in late August starting at roughly 45K. In the past, I was able to approximate my after-tax income by taking my gross income and multiplying that by .75, with the .25 going towards taxes and social security. However, teachers don't pay into social security. So, I guess my question is: will the same amount of money that was previously taken out for social security now just be taken out for the teachers retirement fund? Or is it more or less?

I get the feeling that my instructors realize that the student body is too lame for group work to serve any purpose, but use it anyway to kill time in their thrown-together course. Admit it, it's filler, right?

At the least, admit that the few students who aren't brain dead are getting totally ripped off.

Hi,

As a 5th grade teacher, I've always gotten the citing confused. We don't do as many research projects as older kids but can somebody please tell me whether to use underline, italics, or quotes for the following:

1.) Title of a story from an anthology
2.) Title of a story book.
3.) Title of a song
4.) Title of a movie.
5.) Title of a poem.
6.) Title of a newspaper or magazine article.

Thanksk so much!

I will be teaching it to a group of home school high schoolers. The group is small, about 10 students. No particular missionary in mind. It will be taught once a week.

I have already written here about a problem with my student (he has shown negative attitude which resulted in the general progress of the group). I tried to speak to him about it myself, but he said - no, i wont even think about it, so i had to talk to my boss about that. my boss spoke to their boss and now they made a huge deal out of it. today my boss shocked me with the news that i have to go with two of my bosses (!!!) to the company and discuss the issue with the student and their bosses (!!!). I am honestly shitting myself, because even though i know i am right, i am afraid he will come up something to say against me and this will finish the contract between our school and this company, which pretty much means i am goign to lose my job. I am trying to think if i had done anything that could compromise me during tomorrows conversaion, but those are minor things. i am quite young, so this can be a problem.
Plz help!!! anyone been in this situation?

Has any teacher worked in a school system where merit pay was effective for more than 3 years? If you worked in teaching job where merit pay was an option did you see a change in the teacher moral after it was implemented? Better or worse?

I believe that it is; I am required to read two novels every summer, in my high school and then do multiple reports and projects on them. The work is due the first day of school and we, the class, are then later tested on the material.

I feel that this obstructs the summer of High School students, what do you think?

Also, if I were to have chosen more AP courses (which suck at my high school), I would have been given summer work for Calculus and History, on top of English. That includes, reading textbooks and doing pages of work, all due on the first day of school...this is ridiculous. How are we supposed to perform well if we are never given a break?

I want to do some teaching of high school science and asked a teacher about her recommendations and experience. She said it was not worth it. She told me i would become fustrated with the politics that go into schools. The annoying parents who blame you for their kids faults and the administrations expectations of you to pass every kid. She even said that teachers are those who wanted to do something else but didn't for whatever reason and ended up as teachers. Is she being too negative about it? a little pessimistic? or is she being brutally honest?

I love children and the gift of being able to help someone. This is why i want to be an elementary school teacher. I have patience, am creative, and helpful. the question i have is that I am very shy. Would being shy interfer with teaching? Seeing as you have to reason and talk with parents and other teachers.

Are there any shy teachers out there?
