perhaps, at my age, i should be able to decide for myself, but sometimes, decisions are not so easy. the job is straight literacy in a public school- that is my field of expertids-i work in a children's ste facility teaching all subjects, and i like it. public ed. pays a lot more, but as we all know, tenure is political, no matter how good you are, and at 58, i don't think it would be easy to find a job like i have. well, perhaps, i've answered my own question, unfortunately, i am that age and even with my husband's solid state position, i can't afford to gamble. can't always get what you want!! not happy about that, but true.

I’ve heard of incompetent or uncommitted teachers seeking refuge in easy-admission educational administration programs to continue milking the educational system from the principal’s office. These principals’ power seeking subterfuges, sometimes harassment disguised as supervision, other times jealous and disempowering micro-management, could make a teachers’ work very unrewarding.
On the other hand, disruptive and unmotivated students can make a teacher’s life hell despite empowering school leaders’ support.

I find that I still say "like" and "um" quite often. While I am very aware of the word "like" and use it far less than most people I have seen on campus, I still hate that I use the word because it is annoying and serves no purpose.
I also say "awesome" quite often.

I use a strong tone and can explain concepts clearly, but I would appreciate any tips other teachers or professionals have for developing a voice of authority by getting rid of speech patterns acquired during adolescence.

If you are experienced as being an elementary teacher please answer my questions.

Could you please give me a description of what different grades are like. For example: if you have taught 1st and 3rd grade before could you please tell me what the kids are like in this age group, are they independent or dependent, and then tell me what grade you liked the most.

I am trying to get some input on what grade I should teach because I am going into college this fall and I have no idea what grade i want to teach all i know is that i want to teach in the k-4 area. I love being around younger children (k-1) but I don't know if they are too young for me to teach because they are really dependent, but then again the older grades (3-4) are very hormonal/snotty. Please give me some advice! Thanks!

I want to be a kindergarten teacher and I am currently majoring in Integrated Science and am minoring in Elementary Education (at my school we have to major in a subject area and minor in education). However I am extremely interested in Psychology or Social Work and am considering double-majoring. I want to teach but I also want to have the education to possibly be a child psychologist or a child social worker. Is it a better idea to get a Master's degree in both education AND psychology or social work in order to have a successful career? I don't want to be in school for the rest of my life! In addition to that, I do want to put myself in a good direction when it comes to actually getting a job with a decent salary when I'm done with school. Any serious, sincere advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I may have been unclear in my question on teaching reading to students who speaks Ebonics. I was not suggesting that we teach Ebonics, the students who already know it, that would be beating a dead horse. However, it is a common dialect and these are the students who tend to score poorly on reading assessments. I was simply looking for ideas on which teaching strategies seem to be the most effective.

I am asking if we should teach standard American English and reading to students who already speak Ebonics as if standard English is their second language or second dialect(whichever you choose).

If the students are already speaking Ebonics, should we teach standard American English to them in order to enhance their reading skills?

What other suggestions do you have for overcoming the Ebonics language challenge in order to produce an outstanding reading student?
