What role does classroom management play on the the overall success/failure of student's learning? How?

(I've read the books and formulated my own opinions - not looking for "homework" answers - looking for real life experience.)

I am so nervous about all the things I need to do, things that could go wrong, things that need to be organized. I really am driving myself crazy and losing sleep over next week. I keep telling myself to calm down by giving myself pep talks but they don't seem to work. Can anyone give me any advice?

It is currently called "The Sunshine Club"...I am the one in charge of organizing this for the teachers & staff...but I am not fond of the name "The Sunshine Club"...This club will also honor other employees throughout the school district--ie: Secretaries Day, Custodial Appreciation Week, Paraeducator Appreciation Week, etc...Any suggestions? Thank you in advance...CAKES

If a child in my class asks me, "Have you ever smoked marijuana?" how should I answer? I have smoked it many, many times. Should I lie and say "no"? I can't say yes, because I'll get myself in trouble, and if I say, "That's none of your business," well then I'm giving myself away a bit aren't I? This is not just about smoking pot. I am often naively asked questions that I can't answer without creating controversy. I hate lying, but these children aren't ready to process the complexities of many controversial topics.

Mine was my spanish teacher...
He showed us all these random movies on a regular basis that had nothing to do with spanish at ALL. We watched Cars about ten times in English. If we colored a project then we would get an automatic 100%. This was 7th/8th grade. Definitely my worst teacher ever. (As a teacher at least.) Yours?

Please don't be rude, because I'm a new teacher trying to get information. I honestly don't understand why my students constantly have their hands up calling for me to come to their desk.

I looked in other classrooms and the kids seem to be working quietly at their desks. Whereas in my class, I literally have someone with their hand raised calling my name every 30 seconds.

25% of the time it's a question about the assignment. 75% it's random stuff like needing a pencil, they're finished their work, they want another book from the class library, they got a new dog and want to tell me what it did last night, etc.

I'm a new teacher, so is that just part of the job with this age group or am I doing something wrong?

I want to major in philosophy, because its what I find interesting. BUT my father says he won't pay for my school unless I can give him a variety of job choices that pay fairly well.

All I can think of is a philosophy teacher.

Why on earth do teachers complain so much? They whinge and whine about their "hours", their "responsibilities" their pupils, the pupil's parents, the work environment. Yet they work a third of a year less then all other workers. They also earn in excess of £30,000 after only a few years as juniors: money, remember, for working only 2/3rds of the year and when they also have subsidised housing, mortgages, pensions, insurance, school meals.Whilst, most shameful of all, being at what they laughably call “the chalkface" yet being directly responsible for 50% of school leavers being functionally illiterate.

They also have “professional” pay and absurdly good holidays when they have put very little effort into initial training. Most only just scrape through fourth class degree courses in Teacher Training colleges that aren't even universities.l am sick of their whining and comparing themselves to responsible and serious full timers like Police Officers and nurses. Accept responsibility.

I don't try to intimidate her or anything. Like one time she was calling our names to turn our books back in and when she got to my name, she sounded hoarse when she said it and said it kinda quiet, but she didn't do that to anyone else. Also, when she hasn't seen me in a while, she'll say hey annie in a quiet voice, she's a loud teacher too. I found out that her teacher friends and her husband knows my name and sometimes they give me these weird looks. Sometimes I think my teacher tries to get my attention. One time we were standing outside due to a bomb threat, and she walked away from a group of teachers and threw her arms up in the air for no reason and looked at me. Sometimes, she acts like a total b*tch towards me for no reason. I was a good student in her class, I don't know why she acted like that, and I'm not making it up.

I teach science and we are learning about the Earth's interior. I would like to do a book study with my gifted class with "Journey to the Center of the Earth" by Jules Verne. Any ideas on how to get a class set of books for a reasonable price? I have exhausted my efforts with the public libraries.
