I teach 2nd grade and right after Christmas we do 1 letter a day until we get all the way through the alphabet. We practice regularly during that time and once we hit the letter Z, they are no longer allowed to print in my room. All the signs, all my writing on the board is switched on that day to cursive for the rest of the year.

I don't know what public schools do, because my kids were home schooled. They did cursive by the end of the second grade because they wanted to do Calligraphy and I felt that they needed the background in cursive first.

You usually start learning it in grade 3.

So I would say grade 4. Actually, in grade 4, we had a contest for the best cursive writter.
I won, haha.

So yes, grade 4!

The previous answers are correct. Sort of. That's when they teach it in school. But you said "should". The truth is that no one actually needs to be able to write in cursive. Not ever. Not for anything. Since other people do though, it would be very helpful to be able to read it.

You should learn that in the third grade, and be really good at it by the fifth grade, so that you can enter sixth grade with good penmanship.
