We looked into it but discounted it on cost/benefit grounds. Our local centre is probably not the best, the kids are only in for ten mins and have the work marked and new sheets handed out - not much teaching as such. Felt we could give extra sums at home and buy the Letts books etc to give ours extra work. If you can afford it and your centre is better on the teaching side it is probably worth a go! Kids often do more work for someone else then for a parent. Most kids here do it, and it has helped some! others wont work for any one and it is a complete waste of time and money - only you know your child.

If she has a specific problem area perhaps a tutor for that would be targeting your resources more closely. Again not cheap but might be more tailor made to what she needs.

kumon math helped me, as a child, A LOT. although i wasn't originally struggling with math, i wasn't exceling or doing that well either. after kumon, i wasn't only proficient, but I was also fast at calculations and such. by the time i was in 5th grade, i had reached H after 2 hard years of work. back then, when i was taking kumon, I felt really confident in my work, and started getting better grades. you should really consider having your daughter take kumon. but when she gets older, and is better at math, the homework load could get pretty heavy, so you might only want her to take for a couple years or so.

I too am considering Kumon for my kids. I looked into the program and it seems very thorough. They start the kids at very easy levels so that all get a solid grasp of the basic before they move ahead into more advanced concepts. The only downside is the price and the fact that the kids have to attend twice a week after school (which could get boring after awhile).

Kumon is effective for teaching the basics in math...there's lots of drill, and the children become proficient in number operations. There also is a self discipline aspect that can be beneficial. If you can afford it, why not? If she doesn't succeed, you can always try a tutor.
