I used to be a substitute teacher in ny and want to get back into it but I got less pay because I didn't have a certificate. What do I need to do to get a certificate?

Since you are in New York, the best way to obtain this information is to contact the School Board. Every state is different and requirements vary. Here in Tennessee, you 'need' to have a college degree and be certified in the field you will teach. There is a Praxis exam to 'certify' the teacher in the subject area. I want to encourage you in your pursuit to teach. This is a field that has long since been forgotton. People do not respect teachers as they once did. I firmly believe that anyone who picks up the plow to teach children, must be called to the position because the pay is suffering. But I also believe that the wisdom and excitement and joy that a teacher who really wants to teach can bring to that classroom will definitely make a difference to that child's life. Good luck to you and God bless you! I teach 8th graders and I love being a teacher. The rewards of seeing my students "get it", and the love they give you is worth not getting the big bucks. Teachers effect lives for the future.

Go to the central office for the district/s you want to teach in and have their human resource/personnal department help you get what you need. If they are in desperate need of subs they will help you out. If you don't have any luck there, contact the department of education for your state. Your best bet is to contact BOTH district and state just to make sure you get correct information. I have heard of people getting different answers from both places for the same question.
