I want to tutor children part time evening and weekends but have no idea how i start this.

I have A Levels English, Law and Psychology. A degree in Psychology/Criminology. I currently work as an assistant psychologist for the Prison service and as well as report writing and carrying out risk assessments I teach enhanced thinking skills.

Yes! You can tutor. Start with one kid and focus on the subject you are best at. Experience for yourself what it's like interacting with the student and his/her parents. Get a feel for the tutoring business. When you have gained some experience, get more students. Here's what you can do to find clients/students:
1. Contact counselors in local schools.
2. Put up fliers in supermarkets, laundromats, library bulletin boards.
3. Find out if there are community centers or libraries that offer facilities or programs for tutoring.
4. Take out an advertisement in a local newspaper--for cheaper rates, look for weeklies or all-ad papers.
5. Put fliers on phone poles.
6. Stand outside the school during parents' night and pass out fliers to all the adults that pass.
7. Stuff fliers into faculty mailboxes (get permission from the principal first).
8. Make several 15 minute public-access cable programs that present lessons in your subject(s), and let the cable company show them on public access channels.
9. Wear a t-shirt custom-printed that says "Tutor for Hire!"
10. Go to sites that allow you to post free ads.
As a private tutor can charge a higher rate but you are restricted to specific area - smaller market of potential students. If you tutor online, the rate is lower but you can have a worldwide market of potential students. Try sites like:
(1) http://www.tuitionplaza.com/tutoring/
(2) www.tutor.com
(3) ... many other sites (use search engine - Good luck!)
Hope this helps you.

Carly, it seems like you are pretty qualified to tutor. You may want to think about the topics and kind of clientele you want to tutor. Start there, from there go to places that would interest your "tutees" and maybe put up flyers. If you have a community newsletter, you could also try that. Be up front about payment and hours. Good luck!

Try Sylvan Learning Center. Or a study center in your area. They are usually a good way to start tutoring. If not, you can advertise locally in your town or spread word of mouth to your friends.

In terms of advertising, take advantage of free online business directories like BookMyCity.
Make sure you invest in some affordable management software...something that allows you to manage your calendar and client info, offer online booking, and market to locals.
Good luck!

Hang an ad in a supermarket. People call. Talk to them like you do not care. Lower prices. Do not be afraid to visit homes.
